Bad Fanfiction

As a literary student at the Mississippi School of the Arts, we all have one thing in common: a love for writing. Writing is our passion. It is our rellief from daily stress, and an entry into a brand new world with a new state of mind.

But where do we start? For me, my love of writing came from my hunger for more episodes in a show, or more levels in a game. when youve seen all you can see, but still havent had enough, you turn to the depths of the internet for more content. You look for…

Fanfiction.

Fanfiction is essentially your take on something. You do not own the characters, and you so not say you do. when writing fanfiction, you’re just putting someone elses’ characters in a situation that the origional person did not.

While I’ve read some amazing fanfiction, I’ve also read some pretty atrocious ones as well. The horrible ones are the most inspiring for me. Just the fact that I live in a time where I can read a crossover between Lazytown and Shrek is… questionable, but cool.

The first time I wrote a fanfiction was in 6th grade. This was about the time that the new happy meal boxes were becoming a meme. I had this genius idea to write a Romeo and Juliet style tragedy. It would be a self insert for whoever read it, and they would be the Juliet to our Romeo…. Ronald Mcdonald.

And so, the story “Smile! Ronald Mcdonald x reader” came to be.

It was meant to be a joke, just something funny to share with my couple of friends. Little did I know that story would blow up on the internet. I left it alone on the fanfiction site Wattpad, practically abandoning it for years. I did not know of the monster I had created.

This past year, though, I decided to revisit it, just to read it for a laugh. I re-downloaded the app, and then my phone crashed. 6,000 notifications. If that wasn’t enough, there was a petition created for me to write a second one. The audience felt as though Ronald, and, I quote, “smile-zoned” them. I felt both honored and horrified at the fact that at least 6000 people looked this up, and then wanted even more.

Needless to say, I feel much pressure to write the sequel. Who would have known that my 6th grade shenanigans would have led to this? Will keep you guys updated on the fanfiction.

Is it natural to wonder how people hear your electronic voice? We all have our own interpretations of literature, and what the narrators voice sounds like. To be of influence, i'd love for my electronic voice to be compared to that of a gremlin. When you read my posts, read them in the most gremlin-like voice possible. The kind of gremlin that lives under a bridge of a dried up lake, steals everything, and has a nice stash of marshmallows to roast at the earliest convenience. Do what you want with this information :)

  1. Okay, but “Smile” is just hilarious, and I’d probably sign the petition too if I could find it. I’m looking forward to reading more of your stories!

  2. Despite how… eccentric your fanfiction is, you should be proud that so many people enjoyed something you wrote at such a young age. Keep it up! and don’t stress yourself out to much over it. Let it come to you.

  3. It’s really hard for me to write fanfiction. I respect artists, artwork, and the creative process too much to ever be able to directly take someone’s work and “continue” or “revise” it. I get that a large portion of fanfiction is not meant to be taken seriously, but I take things seriously more often than I probably should. Pardon the old man within me, but I don’t get most fanfiction, whether it’s serious or not. I usually don’t find it that funny or compelling unless it’s really out there to the point where you either A. Can’t read it or B. Don’t want to read it. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love fan created content. Merchandise, cosplays, comics, games, it all shows both dedication to the craft and a respect for the original property. Allow me to put this in layman’s terms: Undertale. I think some Undertale comics are really neat, because they take the world and expand it. It’s a comic that feels like the game, which I respect immensely. Undertale cosplay is interesting as well, but I’m not educated enough about cosplay to say anything more than that. Some of the fangames/Undertale themed mods for other games are awesome. Take Binding of Undertale, a Mod for BOI:R where you can play as a variety of Undertale characters, with inspired abilities and gameplay mechanics. That’s dedication. But with the good, there is the extremely bad. Fanart can get “questionably questionable”, and don’t even get me started on AUs (Alternate Universes (there’s at least 6 trillion in the Undertale fandom)). The point is, I don’t get fanfiction because I’m a 72 year old preschooler.
