What Your Favorite KISS Album says about You (A Brutally Honest Review)

  • Mini Content Warning: Towards the end of this blog, there is a picture of a clown (it’s on an album cover) so if you have a fear of clowns, please view with caution.
  1. KISS (1974)
You know what your like. This album has some classic hits that hold up as undeniable bangers. You will be allowed the aux during the family road trip. You are also probably the one driving during said road trip because you’re either a man over the age of 40, or the child of said man. You probably love all the classics, and I’d go as far to say your taste is justified. You’re less judgmental than most people with alternative music taste; you’d never try to call out a poser for wearing a KISS shirt.

  1. Hotter Than Hell (1974)

There is no way you’re younger than 35. The music on this album isn’t bad by any means, but there’s a reason we only really hear about one KISS album coming out in 1974.

  1. Dressed To Kill (1975)

You’re probably over 30 and I’m almost positive you’ve told your wife the songs on this album remind you of her. There will always be something romantic about hair metal bands singing about women who are way out of their league. I respect you, but you’re not getting the aux on a road trip. Maybe I’ll pass the aux if we’re driving to a party though.

  1. Destroyer (1976)

Once again, you’re a father who remembers KISS from the good ol’ days of his youth. I bet you have some insane tattoos and an even cooler truck. I’d feel safe in an elevator with me. I bet you own a Harley, too.

  1. Rock And Roll Over (1976)

You’ve worked at a bar, probably as a waitress, and you have a pure hatred for people who loop songs on the jukebox. You’ve got a bunch of tiny tattoos, and you’ve kept all of your clothes from your teenage years. I bet you’ve got some of the craziest stories from your youth. You only wear unconventional lipstick shades- bright pinks, purples, maybe blue or green.

  1. Love Gun (1977)

You’re me? Almost all of the songs on this album are on every one of my Spotify playlists. You’re getting the aux for the whole road trip.

  1. Solo Albums; Paul Stanley, Peter Criss, Ace Frehley, Gene Simmons (all 1978)

Tell me you have a favorite band member without telling me. If Gene Simmons is your favorite, you’re getting kicked out of the car in the middle of our road trip.

  1. Dynasty (1979)

You’re ALSO me?? Just kidding. Kind of. But I do trust you with the aux. You like the original sound and you’re generally just a cool dude.

DIRTY LIVIN´. Great song . I really like this funky track . Rating 5 ...

  1. Unmasked (1980)

At this point in the KISS timeline, I’m starting to doubt if you actually like this album or if you just want to be quirky and different. You’re either a 20 y/o film bro trying to impress the goth girl he likes, or a 40 y/o who goes out to bars just to request the live band to play music from your childhood.

  1. Music From “The Elder” (1981)

Have you ever played DND? Just kidding, I know the answer is yes. How many spare character sheets do you have laying around your house? How many campaigns have you written? I don’t trust you with the aux, but I am calling you up for DND nights.

  1. Creatures Of The Night (1982)

You get the aux, but you are NOT allowed to drive. You have multiple tickets for speeding, and you have gotten far too many DUIs to be allowed in a car. You’re cool but you probably were a teen in the 80s and I know you did a fair bit of shoplifting. Good for you, I guess. Stick it to the man.

  1. Lick It Up (1983)

You’re a man with a lower back tattoo. You were huge in the queer club scene of the 80s-90s, and I want to hear every story you have to tell.

  1. Animalize (1984)

You’re, once again, over the age of 40. Your favorite color is purple, and your house is covered in animal print. You own far too many expensive, vintage liquors. You’ve paid for your grandchildren’s college tuitions decades in advance. You wear sunglasses and leather jackets till the day you die of liver failure. You’re unmarried but by choice. I don’t trust you behind the wheel, but you get the aux.

  1. Asylum (1985)

This is hard. You’re either a sleazebag I never want to be in the same room as, or you’re just lying, and this isn’t your favorite album. Either way, you love Gene Simmons and you’re not getting in my car.

  1. Crazy Nights (1987)

You were a kid during the 80s, teen during the 90s. You had an older sibling who was a total badass during the 80s and you wanted to be them so badly. You found your identity in the 90s and moved to a bigger city. You became emersed in the club scene and probably ended up as an extra in multiple block busters. Speaking of block busters and movies in general, you’re working in film today. Maybe you’re an actor, maybe you’re a director. Either way, your older sibling is proud of you.

  1. Revenge (1992)

You’re probably a hardcore metal fan who only got into KISS through bands like Judas Priest and Motley Crue. You appreciate the shift from glam rock to a more hardcore sound. I don’t completely trust your judgment, but I can see where you’re coming from.

  1. Carnival of Souls: The Final Sessions (1997)

I feel like you didn’t realize you were listening to KISS the first time you heard this album. You probably love Nirvana, Slipknot, System of a Down, even Deftones. You like the slower and more mellow tunes. You were probably an emo teen when this album came out. I respect you and your ancient Myspace account.

You’ve either never listened to original KISS albums, or you just don’t enjoy glam rock. I don’t entirely trust your judgment, but I’d trust you with the aux for at least four to five songs.

Psycho Circus [VINYL]: Amazon.co.uk: Music

  1. Sonic Boom (2009)

You like it for what it represents. You were a KISS super fan in your youth, and you were proud to see they planned to continue making music in the 2000s. You’re, again, probably over 40, a father, and a gym regular. I respectfully will not give you the aux, but I will allow you to suggest music from the back seat.

  1. Monster (2012)

I refuse to believe this is your absolute favorite album. I think you’re just nostalgic for what the band used to be. You miss biking to the record store to see if they have the newest KISS vinyl. You miss all the band shirts you don’t fit into anymore. You miss who you were when you first discovered the band. You miss your long hair, your jean leather vest, your studded boots. You’re a real one.

My top songs from Solar Power by Lorde

I have been a Lorde fan for as long as I can remember. From Pure Heroine to Melodrama, I’ve listened to it all. Even The Love Club EP. My top album of hers, though, has to be Solar Power. It touches less on the teenage nostalgia of Pure Heroine, and the early adulthood confusion of Melodrama, instead focusing on the feelings accompanied by being in your mid to late twenties, right at the end of early adulthood, yet still too young to be called an adult. Lorde meanders through a quarter-life crisis with beachy guitar tracks and soft-spoken vocals. I will also include my favorite lines from each song at the end of my analysis.

The Path

The Path is steeped slowly in mellow guitar riffs, sun-stained lyrics, and high vocals. Lorde sings about how she felt as a famous teen during the release of Pure Heroine. She also references how celebrities are treated like gods, and how she wishes her fans wouldn’t look at her in this light. She croons about how she shouldn’t be viewed as a savior, but as someone trying to find their path as well.

“Supermodels all dancin’ ’round a pharaoh’s tomb”

Stoned at the Nail Salon

Stoned at the Nail Salon is a track about indecision, looking back, and wondering how your life would’ve been if you hadn’t made the decisions you did. Lorde said in an interview that her favorite thing to do when she needed a break was to get high and go get her nails done. She has been unapologetic about her relationship with cannabis. In Stoned at the Nail Salon, Lorde reminisces about her life now, and how it used to be. The chorus repeats the line “Maybe I’m just stoned at the nail salon again” as if she is being silly and merely remembering.

“‘Cause all the music you loved at sixteen you’ll grow out of
And all the times they will change, it’ll all come around”

Secrets from a Girl (Who’s Seen it All)

Secrets from a Girl is a message to Lorde’s younger self. Throughout the song, she refers to insecurities she had about her rising fame as a teen, during the release of her single Still Sane, and Pure Heroine. She also speaks about how she thought she’d never gain self-control, but then contrasts that with a direct example of such behaviors. She includes a spoken word outro as well. A flight attendant, now arriving at Sadness, giving warnings about emotional baggage, and how temperatures are unbearable until you face them. It is clear that even the flight attendant doesn’t know where she is going, and that only you can find your way through.

“Couldn’t wait to turn fifteen
Then you blink and it’s been ten years
Growing up a little at a time, then all at once”

Leader of a New Regime

Leader of a New Regime serves as an interlude and is the 10th track of the album. The lyrics are surprisingly short, only two verses, 8 lines altogether. This song is Lorde’s version of a future prophecy, following a pop star after the end of the world. Cities are burned out, and people are retreating to their natural sanctuaries to start again. This pop star has a trunk full of music and designer dresses and plans to live out the rest of her days.  The second verse begs someone to be the leader of a new regime. A message that if we don’t change our ways, we will have nothing.

“Free the keepers of the burnt-out scene another day
Lust and paranoia reign supreme”

Rick And Morty :)

Rick and Morty is a show about a kid and his grandfather going on adventures doing all sorts of wacky thing. for this blog I’m going to be rating the character which aren’t a lot.

1.Morty

The main character of this franchise is a prepubescent boy who has half his mind on work and the other half on his crush Jessica. the reason he is my favorite character is because he brings realism to the show but can show bravery for his family. By the way does anyone else feel bad for the little guy. it always seems like no one wants him except for rick who also treats him like a servant.

Image result for morty

2. Space Beth

Space Beth rather or not if she is the clone or not the clone (Debatable) is a freedom fighter for Alien injustice. She asked rick to clone her because she was tired of her mundane life and needed to explore the galaxy. She’s basically a cooler version of Rick who like father like daughter has many imperfections such as empathy and very questionable tastes.

Ver questionable tastes. Taking Self-love to a whole new level.

3. Rick Sanchez

The other half of Morty and a pain in the bum for the rest of the galaxy I present to you Rick Sanchez the man that has fornicated with planets and entire colonies at once. Rick Sanchez became Rick his wife and daughter were killed by an alternate version of himself Rick prime. Burden by guilt for the death of his family he explores the galaxy for the man that killed him. Which took him decades but recently he was able to kill him and get revenge, but he still has a hole in his chest that will never be filled. Hopefully his grandson can.

4. Beth Smith

Daughter of Rick Sanches, Wife of Jerry smith, Mother of Morty and Summer smith AND sole provider of the smith family (jerry a bum). Beth is a horse surgeon and a killer with psychopathic umm urges

she’s also an acholic not the best combination but neither is this family. she hates her father but can help loving him just so that he won’t leave her again (daddy issues) her father loves her as well, but he knows he can’t be that father to her since she is just another versions of his dead daughter.

5. Summer Smith

Summer Smith’s sister of Morty Smith, Daughter of Jerry and Beth Smith, Granddaughter of Rick Sanchez and Mother of Naruto Smith. there isn’t much to say about her to be honest. she the typical teenager stereotype that most old people think. she’s a homicidal manic to so plus?

Frontal Cortex lobe development

Have you ever been head over heels for someone? Specifically, a boy and you just wish they weren’t so ignorant? Well, if it makes you feel any better there may be a science-based answer to why they aren’t responding the way you want and that is due to what stage they are in with developing their frontal cortex lobe. Now you may be wondering what exactly that is it is a lobe (the largest to be specific) of your brain and it’s located in the front area (get it?) and is responsible for almost everything. From the way you think, move, and how you remember certain events but the part that we are talking about what it controls today is how you behave and interact with others.

It’s very important because it is what has major control over our Behavorial and emotional control and women’s develop faster. A womans finishes developing in around mid to late twenty’s while a man’s can still develop all the way into mid to late thirties! A woman’s frontal lobe is also larger than a male even though men have larger brains. It has been found that men have bigger parietal cortexes and amygdala.  Which is space perception and an area that regulates social behavior. Although women have smaller brains, they think with about ten times more white matter than gray matter which is what men think with.

White matter means you are thinking with connections between neurons which allows a woman to be able to think quicker and process information faster than a male. Due to the fact that gray matter is based off of just active neurons. So, taking these factors into consideration it makes perfect sense why your crush of right now or in fifth or sixth grade wasn’t taking the hints you were laying down. It’s because they physically couldn’t or at least would have had a very hard time due to what size and development stage their frontal cortex lobe was in!

Now if you are in your late twenty’s a female and feel you have just had a world crushing revelation that is also due to your frontal cortex lobe as most women experience this once theirs becomes fully developed. As once your frontal lobe is developed you are able to think in a much more logic-based way and process things in a way that you wouldn’t have been able to when you were a teenager. You will still have a few years of dealing with men who seem to not understand a word you are saying though. This is not made in any way to shame men though as certain parts of their brain develop faster than a womans would this is a purely science-based blog!

What the Mouse?

Continuing on ruining childhood movies and shows, this installment is going to be centered around the Mickey Mouse franchise. This includes all of his friends in the universe of which they live in.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse episodes (TV Series 2006 - 2016)

If you are unfamiliar with Mickey Mouse or the characters I will discuss, here is a quick overview: Mickey Mouse is a mouse who is friends with Donald Duck, Daisey, Goofy, Minnie Mouse, Pluto and other animals and in the universe. They all went on quests and adventures similar to many other children’s TV/movies in the 2000’s. I will mostly be referring to the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse show throughout this installment.

All of these characters are made up animals that in the first place shouldn’t be speaking. Somehow, they all have personalities and their own ways of lives. This does tie into the children’s show aspect of it, but why can’t there be real children that the kids can connect with in it?

and Friends Goofy Pluto Disney Cartoon Character Wall Sticker Wall Art ...

Pictured above are Mickey, Goofy, and Pluto. They are all the best of buds, but there are many questions revolving around their friendship dynamic. Goofy and Pluto are both in the canine family, meaning that they are similar in species. Why does Goofy wear clothes and speak articulately while Pluto wears a collar and is portrayed more as a pet to the friend group? There are many different reddit theories out there including one stating that Pluto was actually once like Goofy. He had a brain tumor and underwent surgery. The surgery left him in the state that the viewers now know him as. This is just a theory and is not canonically true, but I would like to know Disney’s answer to it.

Another question that sits with me is the clothing situation with the characters. Back to the original picture, we see that some of the characters are wearing only tops, only bottoms, or a full set of clothing. The only characters that are wearing a full set of clothing are Goofy which makes me wonder if it goes back to the Pluto-Goofy situation and Minnie Mouse. Mickey is the only one not wearing a top while Donald and Daisy Duck wear tops and no bottoms although their bottom feathers are supposed to suggest bottoms. The clothing situation confused me as a child considering that this was a children’s show, and that half of the characters appeared to be half naked.

One of my questions that actually have an answer is the gloves. The characters that have paws wear gloves instead of having bare paws. When Disney was questioned about this, they answered that they wanted to humanize the characters. Which brings me to my next series of questions. Why are we humanizing animals? Why are we wanting the children to feel as though these animals are just like them? What lessons will they learn from humanized animals going on quests throughout their made-up universe to solve nonhuman problems?

Steph’s (Insane) Guide to Spotify and Pinterest

Everyone knows that Spotify is the number one music platform and Pinterest is the number one lifestyle app, but only cool people know about the amazing Pinterest + Spotify combo. I’ve been pretty much addicted to both apps for years and I’ve always had a very specific way of organizing my playlists and boards. I never knew my secret to ultimate organization was so strange until my friend pointed it out and now, I’m deciding to share my little secret. Everyone has their own ways to make playlists and boards but if you’re struggling with the way you organize, maybe consider my method that’s taken over a year to perfect.

I’d honestly say I’m an obsessive person, so when I find a new show, movie, or game that I love, I have to do something (other than consume more media about it). That includes making fan art, Pinterest boards, and Spotify playlists.

So, the first step in Steph’s guide is getting inspired! Find something you really like because after all of this, you’ll probably be sick of it. Maybe a show that you just finished (or started!) and you can’t watch anymore episodes right now. Or a movie that you just watched and loved but there’s not much fanbase or media about it online. You could even use that game that you’ve been obsessed with for years but never told anyone because they probably wouldn’t care as much as you do. Finding a celebrity or aesthetic you really like also works! If you want to become super focused on a big, upcoming project, you can choose that too!

Next is making a Spotify playlist! This is important because you can listen to it while you make the Pinterest board. I’m a very physical planner so I usually get a piece of paper and plan out what music I associate with whatever media I’m making a playlist about. If you’re stuck, the website Spotalike helps me a ton. It creates a whole playlist based off of one song you enter.

Think about the songs’ significance to the media or characters you’re basing your playlist off of. To stay focused, I like to write down why I’m adding the song to the playlist. Maybe the meaning of the song relates to the message of your media, or the song matches the time it takes place or was made.

Now it’s time for the Pinterest board! I’ll be honest, this part takes me about a week at least. I’ve been told I “work overtime” on Pinterest. I physically plan this out on paper as well (because I’m insane).

First is the board title. I always add the type of media at the beginning. I use “VG” for video games, “TV” for a show and “MV” for a movie, “CELEB” for celebrities, “AES” for any aesthetics, and “MISC” as miscellaneous for things I can’t put into any of the previous categories. I also use other abbreviations for things a little more niche, if necessary, like “YT” for YouTubers or just “LIFE” for lifestyle boards (like dorm or outfit ideas). I usually separate these from the title of the media with little arrows or brackets. Make sure to use the same symbols for each board so everything looks cohesive.

Next up are the sections! I know some people don’t like to use them in their Pinterest boards but for Steph’s (insane) guide, it’s so necessary. For the title of these, you’ll use the same method you did for the board title. I use “CH” for any characters, “DYN” for dynamics or friendships/relationships, “LOC” for locations or any settings, “BTS” for behind-the-scenes stuff, and “MISC” for anything miscellaneous again (I usually put fanart or memes in this section).

Here are some extra notes that might help! If you’re struggling with finding pins to fill your board with, search up whatever media you’re making a board about with the category it’s in. There’s a small chance that someone who’s good at making Pinterest boards already made one that you can take inspiration from or snatch some pins from. I would also recommend using symbols or emojis to decorate your playlist title and description as well as your board and section titles. And if you like to edit pictures, you can make a custom cover for your playlist and boards!

Thank you for reading this strange blog post where I share my little guide for how I obsess over media with organization (and class)! I’m really curious about others who take their playlists and boards very seriously and their method of organization. Let me know if you take one for the team and use my crazy guide.

Invincible Character Review pt.2

My last blog about this had way too many words, so I decided to do a part two. This one has my favorite character and my least favorite character.

Rex Splode

Rex Splode is a side protagonist that is on the Guardians of the Globe (the Justice League) who can turn anything he touches into an explosive. In the first season, he was funny, but he was not very likeable. His girlfriend was another side protagonist that I will go over soon, and he treated her badly, hence the reason he was not generally liked. He was very cocky and acted tougher than everybody else, but in the second season, he ended up getting a redemption ark that was very likeable. Many redemption arks I have seen have been bland and seem like the show is just trying to make a new likeable character to make more money, but this show makes his redemption ark better, and it makes a lot of sense. He slowly becomes better with time, and an important moment in the show shows him how bad of a person he was, and he realizes something must change before he hurts others. He keeps his cockiness for comedic affect, but he becomes a better hero who is way better to his friends in the end.

Amber Bennet

An Invincible character overview is not correct until you go over how awful this character is. I am not sure if any of you have watched this show, but if you have, I am hoping you agree with me on this. Amber Bennet is a side protagonist that really feels like an antagonist at some points. She is the girlfriend of Invincible, and she really does not understand his struggle. I have tried to leave out spoilers in this overview but there may be a few here. When they start dating, Mark ends up leaving her alone on their plans a few times because of some important hero work that really needs to be taken care of. Invincible does not tell her that he is a hero in the beginning because he did not want anything to happen. So, you can understand why she gets upset with the constant change of plans, right? Wrong. When the balancing gets so tough for Invincible, he ends up telling her that he is a hero. And instead of finally understanding why he has been leaving her alone so often, she says that she knew he was a hero all along and that she is still mad. All because he was not honest with her. After he tries to explain why this was happening, she shuts him up and breaks up with him. The only reason they got back together was because his dad’s absence was covered up as his dad’s death and she felt bad for him. Thankfully, they finally officially broke up at the end of the second season. I have an undying hatred for this character, and I am so glad she is going to be seen a lot less.

Ride the cyclone songs!

Ride the cyclone is a musical about six teens who died on a roller coaster accident. In the music they talk about what they were perceived as and sing about what they dreamt to be. I will be yapping about some of these songs!

1. The Uranium Suite

This sing gives me chills so bad?? The song where Karnak explains their deaths, saying he even told them to ride the cyclone? It gets me so bad, especially hearing them explaining what they felt while dying. It was confusion, since they had no idea what was going on. They felt strange, but they felt so many other things at once. It also gives me the feeling that they’re realizing nothing really even mattered, especially in such a small town like uranium, there’s also the shock that they’re finally out of that dead end town. 10/10 I love the choirs’ voices together.

2. What the world needs

Ocean made my blood boil! This song is so catchy, but it’s really sad to see that’s how she viewed these people that were supposedly her friends. She was extremely full of herself, just bragging about what a good person she is when she actually isn’t. Imagine your friend since pre-k calling you and your entire group zeros? Anyways, 4/10 for being catchy.

3. Noel’s Lament

Imagine being the most romantic boy in town and this is your song? It’s pretty inappropriate, so I cannot go into full detail about this song. Noel wants to be in another era, he wishes to be Monique Gibeau in post-war France. Pretty crazy place, right? I love hearing his dreams, because it’s odd, but it’s interesting. He wants to live passionately, even if it’s rough. 10/10 this was the second RTC song I knew, and it still gives me chills. (I’m a little biased.)

4. Talia

Hearing how Mischa talks about Taila always makes me melt. “I want to take all of the pain from your soul and in the passion factory of my heart, transform it into functional joy.” Like what? That’s beautiful. He wants to marry this girl, that’s he’s never met, and he’s so passionate towards her. Since as Mischa says Ukrainian men only have two emotions, passion and rage! His voice is so beautiful, I have no idea what he’s saying, but it stills sounds good man. Also, I love the switch up since Mischa enjoys more music with techno like his previous song. Anyways, 10/10 the note at the end was angelic.

5. Space age bachelor man

I love Ricky so much, he’s such a weirdo. In RTC Ricky didn’t talk while he was alive, he was a mute, but after he died, he began to talk. The point is Ricky couldn’t/wouldn’t talk. So, how does one cope with being mute? Imagining that he was sent from aliens evolved from cats. He was the savior of the zolarian race. This is also a pretty inappropriate song, but Ricky talks about how we should all just love each other. Life is hard enough, but being negative only makes it harder. 10/10 for the lessons and the cat people.

6. The ballad of Jane Doe

Honestly, top one song for me. The way the song starts makes you feel worse for her in her situation. She had no idea who she was, she wasn’t anything but a body with a doll head. She was begging just to know who she was. She talks about death, someone pointed out how when you lose your head it’s alive for a few more seconds after. She heard the anguish of the street. Then, it feels like anger. She feels rage over being the one who doesn’t remember anything. She doesn’t know anything and doesn’t have anything. Not even her friends remember who she is. 10/10 Imagining singing upside down with those notes?

7. Sugar cloud

Constance realizing that she has a good life. When she was alive, she despised her parents for being happy in Uranium city, but dying showed her that all of the good things that happened to her happened in Uranium city. She was the nicest girl in town, and there was nothing wrong with that.  9/10 her voice gives me chills, point deducted for that stupid recorder.

Exploring Girlhood and Trauma Through Fairytales: Walking through ‘The Path’

Trigger/ Content Warning: This article has mentions of drinking and smoking, as well as implied assault, abusive relationships, and murder. Please read with caution and take care of yourself.

On March 18th, 2009, Belgian video game production company Tale of Tales released a new game titled The Path. Inspired by the Red Riding Hood story, the game follows a family of six girls, all tasked with bringing a basket of goods to their grandmother. When you start up the game, you are presented with a choice as to which girl you play as. When you choose your character, you are placed in the middle of a gravel road surrounded by trees. If you follow the instructions, you will make it to your grandmother’s house quickly, enter through the front door, and sit next to your sick grandmother. The game will end and you will be given a failing score. To score anything higher, you must deliberately defy the rules and go off of the path.
The Path -------- a short horror game by Tale of Tales

Going off the path leads your character into the winding woods surrounding you. Here you will be able to find an interact with odd items and destinations, specific to each character and their story. We will not touch on the items here, but note that there are eighteen in total, and each girl has special reactions to each one. There are six special locations in which each girl will have their “wolf” encounter. These encounters tell a backstory of the traumatic events each girl has experienced.
The Path - Scarlet balladája - YouTube

Starting with the youngest, Robin is nine years old. Robin is naive and juvenile, happy to divert from the path and play in the woods. Her wolf encounter is a literal one. She stumbles across and old graveyard where you learn she doesn’t seem to fully understand the idea of death. While playing in the graveyard, Robin spots a werewolf lurking around the graves. Rather than run away in fear, she runs up to him and jumps on him. She is unable to understand that the wolf is a threat to her life. Before the wolf can buck her off of his back, the screen fades to black.
The PATH-Robin

The scene opens again on Robin’s unconscious body lying in front of her grandmother’s house. Entering the house, you are met with knocked over furniture and claw marks on all the doors. Upstairs you see an upside down crib, in which a bird has built its nest. Past the crib you see a circle of chairs in a room with balloons and presents. In the next room, you are shown an upright bed, covered in what looks like duct tape. Under the tape is something shaped like a human body. At the base of the bed you see a crudely dug grave. When you approach the bed, you will fall into the grave. This will trigger a sequence of images to flash over the screen. An image of the wolf biting at Robin’s red hood, Robin’s face with large claw marks over it, Robin’s upside-down body with a long claw mark across it, a close up of Robin’s twisted legs, and a close up of the wolf’s sharp teeth.

The next sister, Rose, is eleven years old. Despite her young age, she dresses and acts very mature. Many times throughout the game, she makes mentions of religion, the innocents of animals, and her misguided belief that all of mankind is good. Rose’s wolf encounter occurs when she stumbles up the misty lake. She takes a rickety boat out into the middle of the lake. Her “wolf” is a ghostly figure of a man, made of clouds and light. When he spots Rose, he floats toward her and whisks her up in a cloud of white mist.
As Video Game Developers Tale of Tales Change Direction, A Look Back on ...

When the screen fades back in, Rose is lying in front of her grandmother’s house. When entering, you are immediately met with a spinning ceiling fan placed on the ground. Rain will fall as you walk through the entire house. In the kitchen, there is a pair of pliers on the table. The fridge is ajar and inside appears to be a black mass of something. Up the stairs you are shown an all red bathroom, except for a pristine, white bathtub. The bathroom turns into a long hallway of red sinks and toilet stalls, similar to a public restroom. Leaving the bathroom you see a red desk with a bird cage hanging over head. You continue down a checkered hallway with red doors lining the walls. You are led into a long hallway ending in a bright light. Following the light leads you into a bedroom, which is filled with white mist and spinning rapidly. All the furniture has been torn apart and whipping wildly around the room. This triggers the sequence of images. A picture of Rose’s outstretched arm surrounded by clouds, a close up of Rose’s cloud figure where you can see he seems to have internal organs, a close up of Rose’s head turned up toward the sky, and a blurry image covered in white fog of what could be a rabbit or even Rose herself.

The third sister, Ginger, is thirteen. She is much more tomboyish than her sisters and prefers playing outside and climbing trees than anything else. She is entering her teenage years but makes it very clear that she is not comfortable with experiencing female puberty or adolescence in general. Ginger’s “wolf” is a girl around her age, wearing a red dress. When Ginger enters a flower field, the girl in red comes up behind her and covers Ginger’s eyes with her hands. The two play around for a bit before laying down in the field, laughing together. The camera pulls away and fades out.

When the camera fades back in, Ginger is alone and laying in the forest. She gets up and walks slowly to her grandmother’s house with her head down. Entering the house, you are shown a relatively normal house with dark red walls. However, everything seems to be covered in a thick, tangled mess of black hair. All the doors have been replaced by barbed wire gates. Up dark some red stairs, and into the attic, we see it is  also tangled with long black hair. You enter a room with two child-sized beds. One is white and the other is a dark red. The player is forced to crawl in the room, where you find that there are toy soldiers and dinosaurs hidden under the red bed. The player walks through the only available door, which leads into a tight hallway with more hair. Through the hallway, you enter a room covered floor to ceiling in bloody mattresses. Bird feathers are spinning around the room like snow. As the player walks forward, they trip over barbed wire and the images begin to flash. We seem an image of Ginger’s legs folded uncomfortable together with barbed wire covering the screen, a close up of the girl in red, Ginger’s neck stretched out with barbed wire around it, the girl in red with her hands covered in barbed wire, and a blurry image of Ginger flailing her arms.

Fourth sister, Ruby, is easily the fan favorite. She is fifteen and has a noticeably emo or mall goth fashion style. She is also wearing a knee brace for the whole game, although it is unclear what happened to her. She has a pessimistic view of life and clearly is battling with her own mental health issues. Ruby’s wolf encounter takes place at an old playground. After playing on the swings for a bit, Ruby walks over to a blonde-haired man on a bench, smoking a cigarette. They seem familiar with each other. He hands her the cigarette, and she takes it without hesitation. The camera zooms out as the two sit side by side.
Path, The Download (2009 Adventure Game)

When you fade back in, Ruby is laying on the ground with her leg bent back in an uncomfortable position. She stands and limps her way to grandmother’s house. Once inside, you see urns sitting on a coffee table. Under the table is a case of beers. In the kitchen there is a knife on the table and more beer in the fridge. The entire house has a dark red hue. Up the stairs, you enter the attic, which is filled with billowing black smoke. Following the smoke leads past a generator room and down a school hallway lined with lockers. Black fog and loose papers swirl around. At the end of the hallway, the camera shifts to the side and you are lead into a school gymnasium. There are large, black tire marks all around the gym floor, walls, and ceiling. A large bird cage drops down next to the player and the door swings open. The player steps inside and is swung across the gymnasium. You swing past a wrecked car producing white smoke. The player falls from the cage and the screen blacks out for a moment. When the screen fades back in, the player crawls out of the gym. You enter a long hallway of boiler room equipment, towards a red door. This door leads into a bed room in which a bed is stuck to a spinning carousel. There is a large metal board slicing through the bed, as well as another hanging overhead. The bed is crushed by the board and the images begin to flash. A close up of Ruby’s face which is shattered like a porcelain doll, Ruby’s unconscious body on the ground with her legs folded unnaturally, a close up on the face of the blonde man from the playground, and a picture of the man’s arm with sickly, gray veins.

The second oldest sister, Carmen, is seventeen. She is very confident and aware of her beauty. She doesn’t like boys her age because she finds them immature and obnoxious. She tends to act much older than she really is because of this. Carmen’s wolf encounter takes place at a campsite. There’s a log cabin, two tents, and a campfire in the center. A middle-age woodsman is cutting down a tree marked with a red ex. When Carmen approaches him, he stops and acknowledges her. She takes his hat and puts it on. He doesn’t argue, instead walks toward the campfire and sits down. Carmen follows. The woodsman hands her a beer, which she accepts, then opens one for himself. The two sit together by the fire and the screen fades to black.

We fade in on Carmen, laying in a heap outside grandmother’s house. She stands, grabs her neck as if it hurts, then continues walking. Once inside, you see that the ceiling fan has been replaced by a large rotating blade. There is a coffee table with red urns sitting atop it. In the kitchen, you see a knife on the table and an open fridge. The door leading out is red, but marked with a white ex. Down some steep red stairs, you are shown an empty swimming pool with wooden chairs and a tree stump at the bottom. By the far wall of the room, there is a stack of matresses with a white rocking chair on top. You leave through a narrow, winding hallway with wood-paneled walls, all marked with red exes. Tree branches begin to grow into the hallway. You enter a room with axes mounted on the wall, and, on the far wall, a large animal head is mounted. When the player approaches the animal head, they will fall through a hole in the floor. This leads into a new hallways. There is a large saw blade on the wall and a path of roaring flames. Past the fire and through a door, you enter a bedroom filled with yellow-ish fog. There is a bed in the center which has a large tree growing from it. Approaching the bed causes the series of images to appear. The woodsman’s face with two axes crossed behind him, an image of the woodsman winding back to strike something with his ax, Carmen on her side with blood dripping from her mouth, Carmen crawling with the outline of flames overlaying the picture, a close up of Carmen’s face with a red ex across it.
The PATH-----Carmen

The oldest sister, Scarlet, is only nineteen. With their actual mother seemingly absent, Scarlet has become a mother figure to her younger siblings. She puts aside her dreams so she can support her sisters. She yearns for a life outside of the small apartment she lives in, but with her younger sister being only nine years old, she knows it’ll be a while before she’s truly free. Scarlet’s wolf encounter takes place at the run down theater. She walks to an old piano to play it, when a cloaked figure with long, white hair approaches her. This person instructs her on where to place her hands. The camera then zooms out and the screen fades.
The Path (Game) - Giant Bomb

You fade back in with Scarlet struggling to stand on the path outside her grandmother’s house. When she enters, you see that all the furniture in the house had been covered in white sheets. The blades of the ceiling fan are missing. The kitchen is completely bare. There is a sickly green hue over the entire scene. Upstairs, you see rows and rows of empty glass jars lined up symmetrically on the floor. Through a stark-white door, you are led down a green hallway with dark oak walls and towers upon towers of books. You enter a room at the end of the hall in which a plethora of instruments whirl wildly around you and play themselves. The player floats through that room and is led into another, much larger room. This room is filled with thick, white clouds. Two large curtains are pulled up from the middle of the room and what looks like a bed is revealed. At this, you fade out into the flashing images. You are shown the hands of the white-haired instructor with claw-like fingernails, a close up on Scarlet’s eyes which has inverted colors, so she appears green, a black and white image of the white-haired instructor, and Scarlet’s body sprawled, with strings tied to each limb.

In the second installment of this series, I will touch on the theorized and intended meanings behind each character’s story. I have done my best to explain most of the game, but I still highly encourage you to play it yourself. It is typically $5-$10 on Steam, and there are a multitude of playthroughs on YouTube at your disposal. I also encourage you to watch the videos Izzzyzzz has made on this game as she goes into much more detail and dives into the background of the developers as well. Thank you for reading to the end and I hope you will be back for part two.

What is Ego?

“If you get your ego in your way, you will only look to other people and circumstances to blame.”

Jocko Willink

What is ego? I’m certain it’s a word you’ve heard before. Oxford Languages defines ego as “a person’s sense of self-esteem or self-importance.” Simply put, ego is the mediator between a person’s psyche and reality. It is one of three parts of our psyche. These were defined by Freud as the Id, Ego, and Super-ego (not really named like that, but none of us speak German, do we?). I will say this, Freud was a drug addict who had some really terrible ideas about familial relationships, but some of the concepts he came up with are still applicable and relevant.
Now to figure out what Ego is, we must touch on the other two parts of our psyche, the Id and the Super-Ego.

Id:

The Id is described as the unconscious source of our emotional impulses, bodily needs, desires and wants. The Id is governed by something called the pleasure principle. Basically, Freud’s way of describing our innate desire to go towards things that feel good, rather than painful things. The Id knows no good or bad, reason, logic, or conscious thought. The Id cares only about sating its impulses and desires. Id is comprised of all instinctual impulses that begin at birth. When we are born, our psyche is mainly comprised of id, but as we grow and learn, part of the id develops into the Ego. The Id can only be described in relation to the Ego, because our understanding of Id is limited only to our dreams and various neuroses. The Id has no organization, or unified will, so multiple conflicting desires or instincts can exist within the Id at the same time without cancelling out. Pretty much, you can love and hate someone at the same time where the Id is concerned.

Ego:

Moving on to the Ego. The Ego realizes that we cannot mindlessly sate our desires as the Id wishes. Rather, we must act according to societal expectations and morals. The Ego has something the Id doesn’t. Control. Now Freud originally only described the Ego as the self, but later expanded it to include our judgement, reasoning and logic, planning, memory, and processing information. Ego is what mainly constitutes our general, day-to-day thought processes. The Ego’s job is to balance the uninhibited desires of the Id, the reality of the outside world, and the limitations imposed on it by the Super-Ego, all at the same time. For example, where the Id would desire a soda, and the Super-Ego refuses it because of the high sugar content, the Ego’s purpose is to find a workaround that minimizes conflict by pleasing both parties, in this instance by getting a sugar-free or diet soda. The ego must constantly balance all of these, always. The Ego is concerned with self-preservation, wishing to please the Id and act according to reality, all while staying within the confines of the parameters strictly enforced by the Super-Ego. The Ego is constantly plagued by anxiety regarding the outside world, moral anxiety or guilt caused by the Super-Ego, all while wrestling with the intense desires and passions of the Id. The Ego wants to serve the Id, ignoring the finer details of life to keep the Id complacent, while pretending to be concerned with reality, all the while being constantly scrutinized by the Super-Ego, which punishes it with anxiety, guilt, and feelings of inferiority. To process all these conflicting feelings, the ego employs coping mechanisms. Now, there is a laundry list of coping mechanisms I could share, but my head hurts, so I won’t be doing that. Some of the main ones are repression, denial, projection, and suppression. The difference between repression and suppression is that with repression, anxiety-inducing thoughts or memories are simply prevented from entering the mind, while suppression is the conscious act of forgetting or removing something from your head. Suppression can also be associated by obsessive compulsive disorder.

Super-Ego:

The Super-Ego is not the Ego dressed up in tights with a catchy theme song. The Super-Ego is a complete introjection of cultural standards, mainly taught by parents and other authority figures. Super-Ego is perfectionism personified. It wrote the book on nagging. Think of it like that one authority figure who thinks that you’re never good enough just constantly in your head. It’s mainly, but not entirely unconscious, and serves only to criticize and prohibit the expression of desires, feelings, fantasies, and actions. The Super-Ego and the Id cannot exist alone together. It’s like putting an aggressive cat and a reactive dog in a room together without a human to separate them. And this is the purpose of the Ego. To mediate and placate both the Id and the Super-Ego, while also processing reality. Now Freud goes on to talk about the Oedipus complex but that has been proven to be inaccurate and perverted so I will not be talking about it. The Super-Ego is a manifestation of all the beliefs and behaviors your parents and other authority figures instilled in you. Freud describes a child’s Super-Ego as not a model of its parents, but of its parents’ Super-Ego. This is how traditional values are passed down. Parents instill in their children what they wish they had been instilled with as children, and the children begin structuring themselves with that.
