TANGENT TIME!

The entirety of Kingdom Hearts first begins with Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep. Where you, the player, choose between three destined keyblade apprentices under Master Eraqus. A keyblade Master. They’re story begins in the Land of Departure.

Master Eraqus and His Philosophy of Light.

The person pictured above is Master Eraqus. He is the one responsible for overseeing his apprentices: Terra, Aqua, and Ventus.
Master Eraqus is a philosopher of light. His teachings are about how light must be protected from the darkness, because darkness is what corrupts people’s hearts, but that’s not all. His teachings go beyond simply: avoid the darkness and protect the light. Eraqus believes that ALL darkness must be destroyed, eradicated, whenever the opportunity arises.
He’s thorough with these teachings to his disciples/apprentices, but each apprentice has their own diverging paths. Some more catastrophic than someone might have expected hailing from a teacher of Light.
These teachings go against one of, if not the most, important antagonists in the entire series of Kingdom Hearts.
Xehanort and His Philosophy of Darkness

(Yes, he’s bald, ugly, and evil)
This is Xehanort. Xehanorts entire perception of Darkness is that the Darkness should be studied and understood. That instead of fending off the Darkness with Light, he believes that both Light and Darkness are fundamentals to the world.
BUUUUUUUT the way he goes about enacting his philosophy is…a bit brutal.
Xehanort has always believed that the Light and Darkness are essentially two sides of the same coin. One cannot exist without the other (Light) and the other cannot be destroyed (Darkness). But I want you to keep this in mind. Xehanort in not simply fiddling with the Darkness because it’s a concept that intrigues him. Xehanort LIKES the Darkness. You would think a guy like him would be all about balance amongst worlds after he explains his philosophy in a very vague way, right? WRONG! VERY WRONG! Xehanort wants to use the Darkness as a weapon. A tool that infests and spreads amongst the world’s so he can start creation anew. He disagrees entirely with the idea that Light should eradicate the Darkness, instead he prefers to see the Light as a form of tyranny and himself and the Darkness as it’s usurpers. Darkness, at least for him, is a utensil used to invoke forced change. In other words, he’s plunging the worlds into Darkness.
He would eventually test his own belief on a very important person in the future to see just how his plan would work.
The Keyblade War(s)

The Keyblade War was cataclysmic, and it plunged the world into destruction and Darkness. The small key like objects scattered around the clay field, those were once Keyblades held by great Keyblade masters.
Once upon a time, when the world was but only an age. The Age of Fairytales. The world had been made up of entirely light and perceived to have come from Kingdom Hearts, which was believed to be made of Light as Kingdom Hearts is the heart of ALL worlds. and was safeguarded by the X-blade, the kingdoms counterpart and one of the most powerful and most sought after keyblade.

Because of this one keyblade, an entire war erupted between the Light and the Darkness. A war that weighed so heavily on the X-blade that the X-Blade couldn’t maintain its form and broke into twenty pieces. Seven pieces went to the Light and thirteen went to the Darkness, never to return.
Because of the brutality of the war, from the Darkness birthed pure blooded Heartless. These beings of Darkness were responsible for attacking human or pure creatures’ hearts.
However, not long after, a story recalled from the The Book of Prophecies retells a story about the Master of Masters who manipulates his five Foretellers and keyblade wielders and another war elapsed, but this time it was a civil war competing for the worlds Lux (Light Energy). Because of this civil war, the true Kingdom Hearts collapsed. The Light fell and the world was cast into Darkness.
The Keyblade Graveyard was where the civil war had taken place. The picture only shows a couple groups of keyblades in comparison to the thousands and thousands of keybaldes that are littered all around that one world. On the mountains, in chasms, everywhere.
The Burden of the Keyblade.

The results of the war left conflict in the hearts of keyblade wielders. Being a keyblade wielder, and a wielder alone, means you are a protector of light…or a harbinger of chaos.
They do not choose the keyblade, the keyblade chooses them. It evaluates the heart and from its judgment and evaluation. The chosen one must have a strong enough heart to keep the balance of Light and Darkness not just physically but also eternally, keeping the Darkness out of their own hearts.
It sounds easy. Except it’s not, it’s really not. In my next blog I will discuss the three different protagonists of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and how truly difficult it is to be a keyblae wielder, the importance of hearts, and their relationships.
So if you’ve been interested thus far, good! I’m glad! I’m sooooo happy. Because we have a long way to go. We’re only on one main world babe and three characters we’re not even to the main plot yet babes, this is the origin story 😀
