My “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” Review, Part 2

I’ll pick up right where I left off, so if you haven’t read the first part of this deep dive, you’re gonna be a bit confused. Anyways, all the main characters are in the basement of the Bellows haunted house and Stella has founded the rumored book of Sarah Bellows’ stories. Allegedly, these stories were written in the blood of children, or some spooky BS like that. Stella doesn’t seem worried at all and immediately wants to read it, but Chuck is insistent that they get the hell out of there. Suddenly the candles in the basement go out, everyone freaks out, then they run to the door and try to leave. Turns out, evil bully Tommy has trapped them there. Ruth is there with him, begging him to let her brother and his friends out. She ends up getting shoved into the basement as well and Tommy leaves them all locked down there.

They end up getting out pretty easily, but I wanna take this time to talk more about Chuck and Auggie’s relationship. As previously stated, Chuck and Ruth are brother and sister and have a pretty average, bickering sibling relationship. Auggie has some degree of feelings for Ruth and gets flustered when he’s around her, and this really bothers Chuck. My first thought is he’s just defensive of his sister and he doesn’t like the idea of his best friend dating his sister. However, he hates when Auggie flirts with anyone. There was a moment earlier in the movie where it was clear Auggie either has or did at one point have a crush on Stella, something Chuck also didn’t approve of. Chuck doesn’t show interest in anyone, except Auggie. More on that later, but, at this point in the movie, it became clear to me that these guys have something going on.

When they get out of the house, they get back to Ramon’s car and find it’s been vandalized by Tommy and his goons. They wrote a slur on his hood and slashed his tires. Ramon had been living out of his car, so this is a huge issue for him. Stella, for some reason, suggests he come home with her and sleep in her basement. Girl, that man is an adult and a stranger… Anyways, he agrees because he has feelings for her. When he gets to her house, this is when he starts going through her room and reading her journals and stuff. Genuinely, my rage for this man grows the more I think about the crazy stuff they just let him get away with. Anyways, he does end up sleeping in the basement and not in Stella’s room, thank GOD.

Alone in her room, Stella takes out Sarah Bellows book of stories that she stole from the Bellows’ house. Like an idiot, she took the cursed book from the haunted house and now everyone is gonna die. She starts flipping through the stories and then finds some blank pages. She’s about to close the book when red text starts appearing on the blank pages. When she touches it, the red “ink” smears. She watches the story appear on the page and starts reading it and then Tommy’s name appears in the story. The camera cuts to Tommy at his family farm, doing chores for his mom. Long story short, he gets lost in the cornfield and then gets attacked by a living scarecrow that turns him into a scarecrow.

The next day at school, there are cops everywhere because Tommy is missing and he’s on the football team so, of course, everyone is worried. Stella is trying to show the book to Chuck and Auggie and convince them that Tommy is somehow missing because of the book. Chuck seems to believe her, given that he saw that old lady at the house and generally he seems more open to the idea of the supernatural. Auggie, on the other hand, is a skeptic. He thinks his friends are just stressed and somewhat crazy and that the book is just making things worse. This, of course, means he’s gonna die next.

Stella ends up throwing Sarah Bellows’ book in the trash and trying to separate herself from it. She tries to convince Ramon that the book took Tommy, and they even go to see the scarecrow on Tommy’s family farm. The scarecrow is wearing Tommy’s letterman jacket. Ramon isn’t convinced, but is more worried about a run in with the cops and insists they leave. They get back to Stella’s house and Ramon is right back to snooping through her stuff. He ends up finding Sarah Bellows’ book, which has magically reappeared in Stella’s room, and he starts reading it. Stella is terrified and wants to get rid of it. They fight over it, but then a new story starts being written and it’s about Auggie. Stella tries to contact Auggie on their walkie talkies, and she gets a hold of him but he’s still dismissive and doesn’t believe her. Eventually his story starts coming true and he freaks out. Stella and Ramon try to get to Auggie’s house and save him, but they’re too late. Auggie’s story is the story about the corpse’s toe that ends up in someone’s stew, and then the corpse comes back for their toe. Auggie ends up hiding under his bed but then gets dragged away by the corpse. It’s not clear where he goes, given he gets dragged through his wall and out of time and space.

This is where another big question presents itself to me. Are people dying? Are they being transported to the book universe? Is that like limbo? Where are they going and can they come back? I have answered those questions on my own, but obviously none of those answers are canon.

Anyways, Auggie is gone, and Stella has to break the news to Chuck and Ruth. Chuck loses his absolute mind over this. Like Achilles after the death of Patroclus, Chuck is angry, confused, and crying about how they have to get Auggie back. Chuck suggests they go to the police, but Ramon immediately shuts that idea down because he doesn’t want to talk to the cops. While I don’t think the cops could help them in this situation, I’m still pissed at how dismissive Ramon is. Like no one said you had to go?? We’ll go talk to the cops and you stay here!!!! Jesus… Anyways, Ruth still doesn’t believe that anything is going wrong- She thinks it’s some Halloween prank. She leaves in a huff because she is in the school play and has to go get ready. So, naturally, she’ll be attacked next.

In the meantime, Chuck, Stella, and Ramon try to do more research. They try to burn the book- doesn’t work. They go to the library to learn more about the Bellows family and Sarah Bellows as a person. While at the library, a new story starts being written and it’s clearly about Ruth. This leads to one of the more popular scenes in the movie, and one I still close my eyes during, despite having seen this movie multiple times. So, Ruth has had this pimple on her cheek from the beginning of the movie and it’s only gotten worse. Now, mere minutes before she’s supposed to go on stage for her performance, her pimple is swelling and pulsing. She runs to the bathroom to try and cover it up with more powder, but it ends up exploding into millions of spiders. I’m recoiling in my skin just thinking about it. However, Ruth doesn’t die. Stella and the gang are able to get to her in time. Chuck comforts his sister and protects her from the spiders while Stella and Ramon kinda just stare on in shock and horror.

Ruth ends up being sent to a mental hospital, but at least she’s alive. She will be important later, so don’t forget her. Anyways, Stella and Chuck have a conversation after Ruth gets driven off; Chuck is crying because he just lost his best friend and his sister, and Stella is like “It’s all ok though because we’re a team and we’ll figure it out” or whatever. Then the cops confront them and are like “Why are you guys always around or friends with the people being taken?” and they’re like “I don’t know, that’s so weird… Maybe you guys should do your job better”. There was also a scene after Tommy’s death where the main evil cop tried to accuse Ramon of killing or kidnapping Tommy, so it’s clear that all the cops in this town have it out for them.

After Ruth is taken to the mental hospital, Stella, Chuck, and Ramon decide to do more research into Sarah Bellows in hopes of figuring out how to break this curse/get rid of the book. They visit an older black woman named Lou Lou, who’s mother had worked for the Bellows as a maid or servant. Lou Lou’s mother was fired as it was believed she taught black magic to Sarah Bellows. Lou Lou blind and generally unstable, both with her physical and mental health. Regardless, she remembers Sarah Bellows and tells the three main characters that Sarah was a misunderstood young girl who was abused by her family. When she sees the book, she gets upset and tells them they shouldn’t have messed with it. She begins spiraling and rambling about Sarah’s suicide after she was forced into a mental hospital by her family. The main three are quickly rushed out by Lou Lou’s daughter.

This new clue leads the main three to break into the mental hospital that Sarah had been placed in. The security on this place is so insanely lax- I understand it was the sixties, but the scene of them sneaking in behind some other doctors genuinely felt like a slap in the face. Some parts of this movie are not taken nearly as seriously as they warrant, and this moment is definitely one of those.

Anyways, they’re trying to find the records room where all the patient information is stored. Illegal, but who cares. The records room is dubbed the “red room” for some wack reason, but this really bothers Chuck as the mysterious room from the past that he saw while hiding at the Bellows’ house was a red room. He refuses to go with them, and they split up. Stupid, but I love Chuck so I’m defending him on this one. He was protecting his peace. Stella and Ramon go to the red room, and Chuck goes up to the top floor.

This is where we get, arguable, the most popular and recognizable scenes in the whole movie. Chuck gets lost on the top floor and starts hyperventilating, then the security alarms start blaring because they finally realized three kids just broke in and red lights start flashing. Chuck is freaking out, running through the halls and trying to find his way out, when suddenly he sees this extremely pale, extremely bloated creature with long black hair slowly walking toward him. No matter what door he opens or what hallway he turns on, she’s there. I could go on and on about Chuck’s character and the possible metaphors behind this scene, but I’ll save that for later. Anyways, he ends up being consumed by this creature? It’s hard to explain- There are multiple versions of this creature and two of them get him in the middle and kinda merge together, around him? And he disappears into thin air. Crazy way to die.

We’re almost at the end! Gonna call this here but the final part of this review will wrap up the general storyline, as well as my thoughts on how a second movie should go. I may even write an entirely different blog about the implications of the character’s and their deaths/stories, because this is something very important to me and I think about it often. Even little details, like the character’s halloween costumes, their house designs, their names- I love over-analysing stuff guys. Thanks for letting me ramble. I’ll see you again next week!

Fashion Trends, What do they have to do with the economy?

Fashion has long had an influence on society. What people spend on beauty and fashion products can almost directly correlate to the state of the economy. These trends can sometimes be helpful indicators of economic growth and recession. I saw a video the other day talking about this same thing, and I decided to write my blog about it.

Now, speaking specifically about economic growth, there is actually a documented phenomenon that indicates this. Economist George Taylor created the Hemline Index circa 1926 that said the shorter hemlines in fashion Trends are, the more the economy is growing (think flapper dresses of the 20’s and miniskirts of the 60’s) and vice versa, longer hemlines for the recession of an economy (pants and maxi skirts in the Great Depression). Even hair can indicate a recession, a hair trend from 2009 called “recession blonde.” Recession Blonde is a term coined for the grown out blonde color that comes from not going to the salon for a touch up. This can almost directly show that a person does not have enough money to maintain a near constant bottle blonde. Because, of course, when your bank account is low, you’re not going to waste your money on a touch up, are you? Unless looking blonde is an incredibly important thing to you, then I think it’s safe to say you wouldn’t be getting regular touch ups when you’re low on funds.

Makeup especially can show a declining economy. The uptick in buying smaller things can show that not many people have the money for things other than small luxuries. The increase of lipstick purchases can also indicate a recession. During the Great Depression, women began buying more lipsticks, a product that was relatively cheap during the time. This phenomenon is aptly deemed the “Lipstick Effect.” It’s a sort of manifestation of something else called by economists the “income effect.” Basically, when a consumer’s income lowers, demand for more everyday items goes up. And since people can’t buy a trip to the Bahamas to soothe their economic distress, they go to cheaper places like the movie theater and chain fast food stores to forget about their money troubles for a bit. Just like this, people begin buying lipsticks, small luxuries that give you a feeling of beauty without a hefty price tag.

Now, as nice as this indicator is, it does come with a few problems for the economic-savvy consumer. One of these is, lipstick sales aren’t public domain, so consumers can’t have these statistics on demand. The BEA publishes a monthly statistic of “personal care items” purchased, but this often comes with a few months of lag time, so it’s difficult to get an accurate estimate for the consumer of if we’re heading to an economic recession.

I could go on talking about this for hours, but I don’t particularly have the attention span for it. I love the idea that beauty and fashion are so so intertwined with a country’s economy that they can be such a great indicator of a recession.

Much love,

Jude

School is almost over!

It’s so crazy to me that we don’t have to many blogs left until we are at the end of this year! I actually have so many fears not going to lie such as being accepted next year even though I have had good grades, and no write ups this whole year but of course I still have the irrational fear. I want to go over what I’m doing for summer and get other people to talk about their plans too though as I find it interesting what paths we are all going to take! For my summer I got accepted into a WW2 leadership trip which is where I go to New Orleans/ Louisianna for a week with other students and we learn at the WW2 Museum. I’m kind of nerve excited because I don’t know who my roommate is, but we all filled out a forum so I will hopefully get someone I get along with! I also got accepted into a masterclass I think is the word, but it is over summer where I stay at a college and learn from speakers and writers and I’m very excited for it. I am a bit nervous for that to since I have no idea if I will have a roommate or not and I only know one of the speakers well. I am also excited though for the new experience and getting to learn new information and hopefully broaden my writing skills. I have been nervous about my writing skills since all my peers are so talented, but I’ve tried to remind myself that we all are good at different forms of writing. I really want to improve my poetry because I always feel like my rhyming makes my poems almost sound like something fitting for a children’s book no matter how deep the topic is. So hopefully these classes will help teach me how to word things in a way so that it no longer sounds that way. I also plan on using what I learn at the WW2 Museum in my writing as I have always been interested in writing about historical events, and this will make things more fact based. So that is my summer in a wrap and maybe going to Mexico which I really hope happens as I love Mexico and miss it a lot. I used to live there for a short while when I was little, but I can’t remember much of it, so I love visiting because it feels so different yet so foreign at the same time. Aside from that though that’s all and I hope other people reading this blog will share their own plans and even just past summer experiences if wanted!

Ranking Disney Movies (Biased).

I wanted to try something different like ranking things. In this blog, I will rank the top 5 Disney/Pixar movies based on my personal taste, so this tanking will be very biased. I hope you enjoy this ranking. Please let me know what your favorite movies are and how you would rank them.

Toy Story

#5

Toy Story is a movie where toys come to life while their owner is away. The toys will go on adventures to save one another and will even face some difficulties accepting each other. This movie is at number 5 due to the amount of times I have seen all of the movies in this franchise. The animation/CGI was impeccable for the time the movie came out. The soundtrack is very nice and the overall story is also pretty well thought out.

#4

Ratatouille

Ratatouille is a movie where a rat (Remy) makes his way into a top of the line restaurant in France. This is no ordinary rat as he is gifted with the talent of being able to cook human food. A young chef in the restaurant at first is disgusted by him, but once his talent is discovered, the young man takes Remy in and allows the little chef to teach him how to cook. This little chef will help the restaurant not go under as the biggest food critic in town is on his way to try the restaurant’s food. The animation is top tier along with some of the visuals we get throughout the movie. Being able to visualize what the flavors taste like/feel to Remy is one of my favorite parts in this movie. I also really enjoy the storyline of the movie.

#3

Tangled

This movie is a Disney princess movie and is based off of the German fairy tale, Rapunzel. Rapunzel is a princess who was kidnapped as a baby by a lady (Mother Gothel)  who wanted nothing more than to stay young. Originally, Mother Gothel was staying young by singing to a magical flower. Rapunzel’s mother fell ill toward the end of the pregnancy and the only way to save her and the baby was this magical flower, so the castle workers went out in search for this flower and took away Mother Gothel’s only source of staying young. Mother Gothel then took the baby from her crib so she could use the baby’s magical hair to stay forever young. The family does get united in the end and Rapunzel meets her match along this journey to see the “floating lights” for her birthday. The animation in the movie is amazing as well as the soundtrack. I really enjoy the difference in characters allowing for a more realistic dynamic between them. The storyline is incredible.

#2

Fox and the Hound

This movie is the perfect movie about friendship. A fox named Tod is taken in by an older lady after his mother is killed. A young hunting dog named Copper and Tod become friends while they are young. The two become inseparable before their owners keep them away from each other. The two grow older, Tod becoming a wild fox and Copper becoming a strong hunting dog. They must overcome their natural instincts and differences to salvage the friendship they had before. This movie seems sweet but is so sad. The animation is 10/10 along with the storyline.

#1

Cars

The movie Cars is not just about racing but also self discovery and friendship. Lightning McQueen, the year’s best rookie, is on his way to win the Piston Cup before the race ends in a three-way tie. The winners must compete in California in order to determine the real winner. On his way to California, Lightning becomes abandoned by his driver in a small town known as Radiator Springs. He causes damage to the town in his distress and then is arrested and forced to fix his mess before he may leave. The doctor/judge/mayor of the town is Doc Hudson, also known as the formerly famous racecar, The Hudson Hornet. Lightning looked up to Doc his whole life and now he finally got to meet him. Doc left racing behind him after a big crash and didn’t want to go back to it. Lightning finally gets him out and Doc teaches him how to race on dirt. After making friends, getting a girlfriend, and fixing the road in Radiator Springs, McQueen is spotted by rescuers and is brought to California, being stripped of the life he had known. Doc and the gang all go out and support him and become his new crew and crew chief. This movie has my heart and so does the franchise. The animation is amazing. The storyline is immaculate, teaching kids the importance of friends/family over fame and wealth. It also teaches kids a little history of the interstates overtaking small towns.

Another Review of Stadium Arcadium (Disc 2)

In my last blog, I covered disc 1 of Stadium Arcadium and I’m excited to talk about disc 2! For the longest time, I thought disc 1 was the better half and I would only listen to it and replay it when “Desecration Smile” started playing. I’m glad that I’ve moved on from that and now I listen to both halves and love them equally.

Desecration Smile

“Never in the wrong time or wrong place”

Starting off strong! I think this is a really underrated song. I love the acoustic guitar and the vocals. The background vocals are really strong throughout this entire album and I think this song shows that off really well. They uphold the melody well in the chorus and they also echo the verses really well in other parts. 8/10

Tell Me Baby

“The thing we need is never all that hard to find”

This used to be one of my favorite songs on the entire album. I really like the beginning, it’s slow and sweet and it mimics the melody we hear later on . Then we’re thrown into the actual song and (I’ll admit) it’s really jarring, but it’s really unique to this song and I appreciate it for what it is. 8/10

Hard to Concentrate

“And, finally you have found someone perfect”

This song is really different. The intro is really smooth and I think it was done really well. Also, in this song you can hear the lead singer (Anthony Kiedis) extremely closely. Like you can hear his breath and that gross sound when you open your mouth. Anyway, I like this song but I think it’s pretty boring compared to the rest of the songs on this album. Honestly, it feels rather empty to me. 5/10

21st Century

“Not too sure but I know that it’s meant to be”

I absolutely love the bass in this song. It adds a lot to the song and I think it would be completely different without it. It’s quick and I think it has a really unique sound. Other than that, there’s not much that I can say about it. 7/10

She Looks to Me

“Who’s gonna take you home / And hold you when things aren’t so bright”

I’ve grown to love this song a lot! I wasn’t that big of a fan when I first heard it, I thought it was strange, but now I see it as unique and beautiful. The melody is well crafted, and the instrumentals are so complex – I love it. 8/10

Readymade

“Listen, but don’t be afraid”

This is easily my second favorite song on disc 2. I love listening to this song when I clean. I love how the bass and electric guitar match each other throughout most of the song, I think it creates a rich sound that becomes the main focus. I honestly don’t mind it overpowering the vocals. I also love the breakdowns in this song! 9/10

If

“And if I saw the sun fall down / I’d pick it up and make a crown / One that was a perfect fit for you”

One of my favorite things to do when I listen to this album is to read the lyrics of this song. I think they’re so sweet and well written. I like the quiet buzzing noise in the background, it feels like I’m outside in the middle of summer hearing the air conditioner buzz. I think that’s why I like this song more than I do “Hard to Concentrate.” Both are really mellow, but I favor this one any day. 8/10

Make You Feel Better

“I got dreams so wide like a country mile”

I think this song is really catchy. I really enjoy the drums in this. Also, he says “run amok” here again. I’m not sure why that’s notable to me, but the only time I’ve ever seen the word “amok” is in RHCP songs. This song is really upbeat and the bass and electric guitar parts are really simple but good. Also, you can hear a tambourine! I love tambourines.

Animal Bar

“Runnin’ through the mud, I got a feeling of worth”

Surprisingly, I really love this song! The instrumentals are layered so well and I’m a huge fan of the bass in this. It feels like it’s constantly running and it matches the lyrics and vibe really well. I like how it switches in the chorus and I love the ending. 9/10

So Much I

“Please don’t turn away a friend”

My only note about this song is that it’s alright. I feel like it starts off way too strong at the very beginning. I really enjoy the chorus though! Other than that, I don’t have much to say. 6/10

Storm in a Teacup ★

“I know you can battle the masses, dear”

This is my favorite song on disc 2. I think it’s so incredibly unique, fun, and catchy. I love the lyrics and instrumentals equally in this song, which is rare because I usually favor the instrumentals. Surprisingly, I love the background vocals, especially the fun chanting (?) and I really love the feel of this whole song. I don’t love it as much as I do “Wet Sand,” but it’s my favorite out of disc 2. 11/10

We Believe

“Cause it’s not the first time, nor is it the worst time”

I’m not a huge fan of this song. The background vocals definitely give the illusion of a crowd (and I think that’s really cool!), but I just think it’s really robotic in a strange way. I also think this song is lacking a bit, especially after “Storm in a Teacup.” It’s really unique, though, so I love it as is. 6/10

Turn It Again

“I turn to you, I turn into, and then I turn it again”

I like this song. The bass is funky, the electric guitar is cool, and the vocals are unique. I really enjoy the chorus, but that’s really it. I think I’ve overplayed this song so much to where I don’t like it as much as I used to. I bump to this song in the shower, though. 7/10

Death of a Martian

“Lots of love, just keep it comin’ / Making something out of nothin'”

My first thought is that this song is really weird. But it’s so unique and I love it. I think it’s a really good song to end this album with. It has a beautiful sound and such a good chorus. I think this song is so beautifully crafted and then, there’s the ending. It’s a poem. I got so excited when I heard it for the first time. I adore naturally read poems in songs and I think it’s delivered so well here. I will admit, this song was really confusing to me at first. After a very small amount of digging, I discovered it was about Flea’s (RHCP’s bassist) dog and I think that is absolutely precious. I am such a sucker for pieces written about pets. 10/10

After “Death of a Martian,” there’s a 30 minute long commentary from the band members. I’m ashamed to admit this, but I have never listened to this all the way through. I just cannot sit still enough to listen to it without wanting to hear the album again.

I’m really glad that I was able to review this album, it’s truly my absolute favorite album. That fact should be kept in mind when you see the low ratings because even with a 5/10 rating, it’s still an amazing song in my eyes. The second disc is definitely not as popular as the first, but I still hold it in a very special place in my heart. I want to do more RHCP album reviews, but Stadium Arcadium really took a lot out of me.

March reading list

For today’s blog I’ll be talking about books I’m currently reading this month. I thought this would be a good idea because I want to start keeping a written catalogue of what I read. I figured doing this as a blog series would be an interesting way to keep track of it. I’ll also be providing a little summary of the books as I explain what I like so far. Hopefully you like them enough to read them too.

The Sun is Also a Star (Nicola Yoon): Started reading: 3/24/25; Currently on page 30; Scale of 1-10: 8

 – This book is about two main characters named Natasha and Daniel.  Natasha is an 18-year-old immigrant from Jamaica who has lived most of her life in America, until her father accidently gets a DUI, alerting law officials of their presence. The outcome for her family is deportation. Daniel, an 18-year-old Korean American struggles to compete with his overachieving older brother and their mission to become successful doctors. These two meet and discover their love for one another before Natsha’s family gets deported.

I’ve wanted to get my hands on this book ever since it came out in 2015. I was ecstatic when I found it on the shelf in the library. The colorful cover caught my eye in October, but I was too busy to check it out. Now it’s march and I finally have it. I love that this book alternates 1st person POV of the two main characters. The author even includes POV’s from background characters that the main characters have small interactions with. It’s so interesting to see the narrator’s thoughts and then find out how wrong they were. The only thing I don’t like about this book is the pace. I know I’m only on page thirty, but I feel like the story should be moving faster. I know it’s important to include everyone’s POV, but there are parts I would rather skip.

Bones and All (Camille DeAngelis): Started reading: 2/2/25; Currently on page 60; Scale of 1-10: 7

-This book is about a girl who is abandoned by her mother and is left alone to navigate the world while being a cannibal. She meets this guy who is a hitchhiker (perfectly good dinner), but she notices that he’s different from others. In the sense that he hasn’t left her yet. They go on adventures while she figures out how to tell him that she is a cannibal.

My friend got this book for me at wild fox, and I like it. I heard about the movie before I knew about the book, so naturally I was really excited to read it. It has such interesting language and a lovable protagonist. The protagonist’s backstory really pulls at the reader’s heartstrings. The ONLY issue I have with this book is that I got SPOILED. Yes, I went on the internet because I was curious about characters in the book and got book flashed. Honestly, I wouldn’t be angry about this if the ending was happy, but the ending is very sad. I’m contemplating finishing the book now because I know what’s going to happen.

Fourth Wing (Rebecca Yaros): Started reading 12/27/24; Currently on page 25; Scale of 1-10: 8

-This book is about Voilet Sorrengail who is the daughter of a commanding general. She is forced to join the dragon riders at a war college (a college where trainers can bond with dragons). This novel is a high fantasy and involves a romance between violet and another trainer. From what I’ve heard, this novel is a fun, wild ride.

I like this book. I definitely need to start back reading it because I’m only on page 8. I was a little busy around the time that I got it, so I didn’t read as far as I wanted. I found out this book is a love triangle, which is a book trope that I cannot stand. It can be interesting to read, but as a reader it gives me mixed signals. Still, I don’t know enough about this book to judge it yet, but I’m a little worried. Aside from that, I like everything else about it. I’m a fantasy lover.

Marvel Rivals

Marvel เปิดตัว Marvel Rivals เกม Shooting แบบฉบับ Overwatch | ONE ...

Okay, so recently, Marvel Rivals has been my new obsession. Like, I am playing it any chance I get. It kind of messed my grades up for a bit but I’m fixing that. But this game is so fun for me, like It’s one of my favorites now.

When it was first announced and we saw gameplay of it, I did not want to play. I never found overwatch fun to play in my opinion, so looking at a game that looked so much like it made me not want to play. I was very upset because I really wanted a good marvel game to come out, because they have been Kind of lacking other than the Spider-Man games.

It wasn’t until they released the beta of the game when I started to want to play it. I saw some streamers play it and it looked so fun. I couldn’t play it myself because the beta was only on PC, but I definitely watched. When they added Jeff the Land Shark, I needed it. I was so ready to main Spider-Man and play all day every day.

One day, the full release went out, and it was on all consoles. So of course, I downloaded it instantly and started playing. I quickly realized how hard it was, and I started to distance from it. I really wanted to main Spider-Man, but his play style just wasn’t for me.

Every now and then I would play the game but quickly get off because I would play a character and get mad that I didn’t know how to play. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon Iron Fist when I really started to get back into it. When I tell you that dude if fun, I mean it. His abilities consist of punching, kicking, and more punching. All he does is kick people’s butts. He has HANDS. It’s so fun to go around and beat the crap out of all the vanguards and the supports. He isn’t the easiest to play and it does take a little bit to get used to him, but after I did, he became my main because I can’t live without him. Occasionally when we need a support, I’ll be Jeff, but Iron Fist is my ride or die.

Inside by Bo Burnham: Outtakes

Watch An Hour of Bo Burnham's Outtakes from Award Winning Special ...

Hi guys! Do you remember that two part blog I did on Inside by Bo Burnham? Well, I said I’d talk about the outtakes and here I am! Inside Outtakes is one of my favorite things in the whole entire world. In this blog I’ll only be talking about songs he actually sang, and not just the instrumental, but you should give this a watch or listen! Free on YouTube! Also, some of these songs don’t have actually pictures so I just picked some I like for the most part. Bo Burnham is a very pretty man; I love these pictures.

Small Tw because there’s a picture of a spider down the line.

Bezos III- 1:25

“Jeffery Bezos”

This is the third Bezos song in the deluxe album. It’s just him saying Jeffery Bezos over and over again, but it’s used to transition into the next song.

The Future- 1:33

“I’ll bother getting ready when I bother getting dressed”

The Future is Bo singing about what the future will be like. He’ll wake up at a quarter to ten trying to decipher if it’s real, and his daughter will come wake him up. Well, he doesn’t have a daughter right now, but this is in the future! He doesn’t know if he’s depressed or stressed, or if this will end any time soon. He showers at a quarter to one with a 2-in-1 shampoo. He’s struggling to get up to get dressed and he doesn’t wanna deal with it, so he downloads an app to mediate. It’s the future.

WTFIGO- 0:54

“I don’t know what’s happening”

In this song, Bo talks about how he doesn’t know what’s going on, and he doesn’t know what’s happening. WTFIGO stands for “What the f–k is going on?”

1985- 2:26

“If I could be anybody, dead or alive. I would wanna be my dad in 1985”

Bo starts this song with describing a guy. He’s cool guy with a cool shirt, cool shoes (Did he mention the shirt?) But yeah. This man he’s speaking of gains respect by walking into a room. The news doesn’t affect him when he reads it. He’s happy to be alive, and he’s any white guy in 1985. He supports his family despite his wife’s underwhelming cooking. Bo wants to be who he is right now but 40 years ago. But wait! He doesn’t mean just any white guy. He means his dad, Scott Burnham, in 1985.

Feel Good- 0:43

“I’m not even close to kidding. Write it in an email”

Feel good is the ending song when you watch the video, but it’s here ion the album. In this song Bo talks about how all he wants is to feel good. He wonders if anyone actually knows how to and if they can inform him on how to do that exactly.

10 Best Songs From Bo Burnham: The Inside Outtakes

Five years- 3:48

“Everyone’s a feminist until there is a spider around”

In this song Bo is singing about how he and his partner have been together for five years. He starts off by saying she’s his best friend, and they can work any problem out! In this first example we have of this couple is Bo ordering food and her stealing food from him. He gets upset, and she calls him a psycho.  He just says she owes him a dumpling. Our next situation is the couple seeing a spider and both of them jumping to high ground. Shew tells him to be a man and kill it, and Bo response is that her whole world view collapses the moment there’s a spider. The last verse is him pointing out how she needs to poo every time he uses the bathroom! But they have two bathrooms….

Biden- 0:51

“How is the best-case scenario, Joe?”

This song is short, and I usually skip it. The most I can do is agree with the fact that Joe was a best-case scenario, unfortunately.. Presidency is a long rant for another day. (maybe) But let’s not get too political.

Microwave Popcorn- 2:27

“There’s a button and the button says ‘popcorn’ ”

Bo is making microwaved popcorn! In a microwave because he’s on that wave. (I love this song) We get introduced into the steps on making popcorn. Taking it out the plastic, looking at the directions, putting the packet on the glass- The little glass dish in the microwave! He closes the door. Bo starts singing about how he’s a rule follower because he’s a studious guy. He starts the popcorn and burns it. So, he eats skinny pops instead, but when he looks at the microwave, he sees a button that says popcorn! How did he miss that button? The voices take over and the song ends.

Bezos IV- 0:38

“Jeffery Preston Bezos”

Our last Bezos song. Bo is sticking with Jeffery! He gets a feeling when he looks in his eye.. (I don’t know if his other eye even sees..) Do you need reasons why he’s sticking with Jeffery? Well, he doesn’t give any. That’s all!

Spider- 0:35

“I ain’t afraid of no spider”

There’s a spider hiding in the corner! Bo isn’t afraid of no spider, just until it starts moving, and he starts panicking. He loses the spider, and the song ends mid panic.

This Isn’t A Joke- 1:12

“I came out face first”

This isn’t a joke so don’t joke about it. Bo is taking it slow. I think he got a little sidetracked because he starts to talk about his pores, and how weird looking he is. He’s 29, and in his prime! But he doesn’t wanna talk about it. He begins talking about his birth scar, and how he got it because when he was born, he came out face first. Now look at him!

The Chicken- 4:09

“There’s just one thing: The chicken must first cross the road”

Last song, so let’s get emotional. This song always makes me cry, and I’m actually tearing up while typing this. This is a song about why the chicken crossed the road, and I encourage everyone to listen to this song if you don’t listen to any of the others. You may not be as emotional as I am, you might not even like the song, but I love it. Bo starts the story about a chicken who wakes up to the sounds of her husband’s screams. She is nursing eggs, and she is tired of her life. She’s in the dark, thinking about the life she can have. Walking to Memphis, becoming a dentist, anything other than this life. She loves being a mother and a wife, but it feels like that’s all she is. She looked out the window. The next day she wakes up and decides to escape. She wants freedom. She runs out of the coop and stares meadows full of other animals, but there’s just one thing. The road blocking her from this dream. So, she has to cross it to get there, the giant road when she’s so little. She moves one foot after the other but is frozen in the place of headlights. A car coming her way. No one knows what happens next, but Bo says we should think that she got what she wanted. She got to the other side.

10 Best Monologues From Bo Burnham: The Inside Outtakes

My Love-Hate Relationship With “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” (The Movie) Part One

As many of you are familiar with, “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” was a series of scary short stories written by Alvin Schwartz and released in various forms over the years. You’ve probably heard a story from these books, whether you know it or not. These were the type of scary stories that got passed around through elementary schools, all slightly different retellings and all under the pretense that the stories were true. These stories have always held a special place in my heart, so imagine my surprise when, in 2021, I discovered a movie adaptation of the books already existed.

In 2019, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was released. André Øverdal, probably best known for his movie The Autopsy of Jane Doe, directed this film. Guillermo del Toro helped produce this movie, one of my personal favorite filmmakers of all time. His more popular works include Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, as well as his work on The Hobbit films. Two extremely talented horror and sci-fi artists got together to produce an adaptation of the popular scary stories book trilogy and what they created was… definitely something.

I want to start off this movie review by saying that I absolutely love this movie, probably more than most people did. I’ve been obsessed with it for the past four years. I’ve been obsessed with the actors and their other works as well. I’ve put a lot of mental space into thinking about this film. That is why I feel entitled to criticize the plot holes, concerning age gap relationships, misused politicism, and missed opportunity for an amazing sequel. I have an entire script in mind for a second movie so if anyone knows how to get in touch with Andre Overdal, that would be much appreciated.

The movie starts out with a short introduction of sorts from our main character, Stella. She makes a point to mention the importance of stories and how they can change your life. In the grand scheme of things, this introduction isn’t needed. It feels really cliche and also makes it feel that you’re about to watch a kids version of a horror movie, despite the PG-13 rating. I personally think they should’ve committed to an R rated horror movie, because then they wouldn’t have felt the need to have moments like this that cater to a younger audience.

We are introduced to Stella as she bikes around her small town on a random day in the fall. The movie is set in the 1960s, and we are shown that through the characters’ wardrobe, appearance of cars and building, but most importantly, political propaganda. This leads to my second issue; politics are thrown around as a sort of C-plot in this movie and it comes off very weak. I would’ve loved if they dwelled more on the politics of the era at the time, but it almost feels like the political topics were included as an afterthought, and in a very lazy manner. For example, the next character we’re introduced to is Ramon. Ramon is a Mexican American who is fleeing the draft after his brother died in battle. This is a perfect opportunity to discuss the horrible reality that was the Vietnam war, and how many young people lost their lives during battle. However, this whole aspect of his character is pushed to the side as the supernatural aspects of the movie come into play.

Ramon’s character is extremely difficult for me to decide my feelings on. For one, he is obviously eighteen or older if he is being drafted by the military, yet he is supposed to be Stella’s love interest despite the fact that Stella is, at most, 16. I know that’s only a two year hypothetical age gap, but there’s a lot more about their relationship that bothers me. For one, he owns a car, is actively on the run and living on his own, and is extremely vague and secretive about his past. There’s a scene where Stella talks about how she dreams of leaving her small town and going to the big city to pursue writing. Ramon immediately shuts that down and says the city is bad. Later on in the movie he also snoops through her things and starts reading her journals??  On top of that, he is very controlling throughout the movie, despite having just met all of the characters. I want to root for Ramon, especially given that he’s the only person of color in this movie, but he is a weirdo the entire movie and it irks me to my core.

Back on the timeline, we get to meet Stella’s two closest friends, Chuck and Auggie. These two are the epitome of the black cat and golden retriever duo. Chuck is a prankster, a jokester, a class clown if you will. Auggie is extremely serious, stone-faced, and pessimistic. At this point in the movie, we also get to see into their homes and we are shown how different all of the characters’ lives are. Chuck lives in a cramped, messier home with his mom and older sister, Ruth. His palette throughout the movie includes a range of colors, patterns and textures; his house, on the other hand, is very darkly lit and decorated. Auggie’s home is large and spacious, with brighter colors and symmetrical decoration. He lives with his mother and step father, who he has a strained relationship with. Stella lives in a small and cramped home with her father, though her home seems much more comfortable than Chuck’s. The rooms are lit with warm lights and warm colors, a contrast to the dark lighting and muted colors of Chuck’s house. I could go on and on about the fantastic set design and wardrobe of this movie as well as the implications of those things, but that is for another time.

Stella, Auggie, and Chuck are all getting ready for Halloween, despite being highschoolers. It’s not clear how old they are exactly, but they’re not seniors. I know that because Ruth, Chuck’s older sister, is a senior and her football boyfriend, Tommy, is also a senior. Tommy is one of this movie’s non-monster antagonists. He’s super racist towards Ramon, abusive to his girlfriend, and just a cartoonishly evil high school bully to everyone else. On top of that, he’s played by Austin Abrams (one of my favorite actors of my generation), who does an amazing job with whatever role he’s given. The acting in this movie ranges from really amazing to mediocre at best. For example, the racist cop is a very one dimensional character and it’s clear that the actor did the best he could with what he had. There are also a lot of tense scenes throughout the movie that certain actors and actresses had a difficult time with. There are plenty of reasons that might explain why the acting wasn’t top tier, but at the end of the day, it’s still extremely confusing (and pretty hilarious) to see a character remain pretty stone faced after their best friends just died.

Anyways, back to the timeline, the three main characters get dressed up for halloween and go trick-or-treating. The whole reason they’re doing this is so they can prank the school bully, Tommy (Ruth’s boyfriend. Keep up, guys), by throwing a bag of flaming shit into his car. They end up getting chased by Tommy and his goons into a drive-in theater where they have to hide behind rows of cars. They end up seeing Ramon in his car and, for some reason, Stella open’s Ramon’s passenger side door and hops in. Does she know him? Nope. Do Chuck and Auggie follow right behind her? Yup. If I was Ramon, I would’ve lost my mind. To be fair, he is upset about Chuck and Auggie being there, but he was happy that Stella was there. He started blushing and got all nervous- like what?? I don’t care how hot someone is- if they break into my car, I’m losing my mind on them.

Anyways, Ramon doesn’t have any survival instincts and that becomes more and more clear throughout the film. He ends up defending the three from Tommy, and they all decide to leave the drive-in theater and drive to a spooky old house in the middle of nowhere. This is when we’re introduced to the main supernatural elements of this movie. This old house was owned by the Bellows family, a wealthy family who helped put their town on the map. However, legend says that the Bellows had a secret daughter, named Sarah, that they hid away because she was so… ugly? It’s not exactly clear what about her was so off putting- I believe she had albinism, but that is never directly said in the movie. It is how she is portrayed, though. Anyways, legend says that Sarah Bellows would write these stories that she would read the kids in the town through a pipe or hole in the wall that led out of the house. It’s also kinda unclear how she was able to read to these kids if she was locked away… but she’s magic so who cares. Anyways, the Bellows family found out she was reading to kids and they got super mad and tried to punish her, but legend says she ended up massacring her family. Good for her, they all sucked.

Like any teenagers in a horror movie, the main four decide to break into the old haunted house. Almost immediately, Chuck and Auggie run off together. Considering it was the sixties, they never made it canon that the two of them were in love, but they were. This is another detail of this movie I could go on and on about, but I’ll save that for another time. Anyways, Stella and Ramon explore the house together and end up finding the secret room where the Bellows family kept Sarah Bellows hostage. Auggie and Chuck are upstairs at this point, playing hide and seek. Chuck hides in a closet (like come on…) but he suddenly sees light coming from the other side. He opens in slowly and finds that the old room he once was in was now restored to its original form. There is a large bed in the middle of the room, and an old woman sits on it with her giant dog. They stare at him- he gets scared and slams the closet doors. Auggie eventually finds him and teases him about freaking out, but Chuck is ready to get the hell out of there- and I don’t blame him. However, he and Auggie end up joining Stella and Ramon in the secret basement room.

Okay, considering I’m barely a fourth into the movie recap and I’m already nearing 2000 words, I’m gonna call it here. Next week will be part two- Hopefully I can be more productive in that part and less ramble-y. Anyways, thank you for joining me on this ride. If you are at all interested in this movie and have never seen it, PLEASE watch it. The only reason I like picking this movie apart so much is because of how much I love it. Also, if you’re interested in any of the mini tangents I went on in here and want me to expand on them, feel free to let me know! I could talk about this movie for literal years.

Crochet: Remembrance Series

So, I have ADHD. My parents have known for a while, or at least entertained the possibility of me having it. My third grade teacher was the first one to mention it to my parents, but I think it kind of went to the back of their minds, as that teacher and I never got along. But, about a year ago, I got professionally diagnosed with ADHD. ADHD and ADD used to be thought of as different, but now they’re both under the same terms, differentiated as ADHD Hyperactive and ADHD Inattentive. I am the latter, and my parents knew something was off when my grades dropped drastically in about ninth grade and onwards. Now, I am intelligent (not to toot my own horn) but I barely got by with Cs and Ds, while also having high standardized test scores. My GPA was around a 2.5 something, and that was a problem. I got put on medication soon after, but during that small interim period of diagnosed and unmedicated, I picked up crochet! My aunt Peggy had crocheted for years, and those would always be her Christmas or birthday gifts, but she got tired of it and moved on to beading, and she makes some pretty insane stuff with it. She wanted to get rid of all of her yarn and called me and my mom over to take some of it. She had about 4 full trash bags of yarn, and I picked over it all happily. She gave me some crochet hooks and I got to work, teaching myself how to crochet using internet tutorials and patterns. Now, after almost a year of crocheting, I’ve gotten to be incredibly talented at it. I’ve done so many projects and it has helped me overcome my inattentive struggles by giving me something to do with my hands in class while I listened to my teachers. It keeps me from zoning out in a way that medication hasn’t been able to, to my knowledge. In my almost year long stint of crocheting, I’ve done lots of projects. My first one was a bag made out of granny squares, which I never really finished. It still works as a bag, but there’s no lining in it so I can’t really put anything small in it. My second project was a scarf-like wrap made out of a simple black yarn. I really liked it and I enjoyed making it, but I never really wear it because it’s always either too hot or too cold. My third finished project was a star-shaped swaddle I made for my cousin’s newborn, though I never sent it and now I’m sure he’s grown too big for it (sorry, Hannah!). My fourth and most recent project was a large triangle shawl, made with an ombre grey and stony blue yarn. This one, I try to wear often, though it’s not cold enough for it anymore. Right now, I’m working on a project with MSA’s Crochet Club as a whole which I’m incredibly excited for. My next article in the last edition of RISE will be about this.

Much love,
Jude.
