Felix and Marcy:

I was looking for advice on how to stay focused on my novelette, and many people said to write small projects about the characters. After hearing this, I’ve decided to write this week’s blog about these two very loved characters. Now as you guys know, I wrote a 10-minute play called MarcyBug, where I introduced Marcilene and Felix as main characters. Many of my peers, including non-literary students, enjoyed the dynamic that they shared so I chose to center my novelette on them as well.

Marcy is a 17-year-old, school focused, girl who is Felix’s best friend. Felix is an 18-year-old drop out, who loves playing guitar and hanging out. The main conflict between these two is Felixs major crush on Marcy. Since they grew up together, Marcilene views him as a brother rather than a love interest.

Physical Features:

Marcilene: Long brown hair, skinny, around 5,6. She wears basic 2010’s clothes, nothing special. She has basic black glasses. She has freckles scattered across her face. She always has on some type of jewelry as well.

Felix: Jet black, layered hair, chubby, 5,7-ish. He wears baggy jeans, layered belts, layered shirts. (Think peak Rodrick Hefley.) He has candy bracelets on obviously, and always Converse! Basic 2010’s guy. He wears dark eyeliner and if he was a teenager in today’s time, he’d probably be performative.

Character Traits:

Marcilene: She is very on task constantly. She is always worried about everything being perfect. She is very lover girl. She is sweet to everyone she meets and never causes trouble. She has a fair number of friends and is just a very optimistic person. She struggles with social standards, and she always tries to fit in. As she lost her mom when she was young, she still deals with doubt in her family.

Felix: He is extremely laid back and chill. He is constantly playing guitar, and he doesn’t really care what people think about. He is very devoted to his “friendship” with Marcilene. He is very loyal to her. He is a bit ruder than Marcy, however he doesn’t go out of his way to be rude, unless he believes the person deserves it. He has minimal friends, but he loves to go out to parties and whatnot.

I’ve found that music helps you get to know a character very well. This is would I imagine their top 5 songs would look like.

Marceline’s Top 5:  Felix’s Top 5:
Us and Them- Pink Floyd Something from Nothing- Foo Fighters
Here Comes the Sun- The Beatles  Howlin’ for You- The Black Keys
Rolling in the Deep- Adele Rollin’- Limp Bizkit
Arrow- The Head and the Heart Blind- Korn
Ho Hey- The Lumineers Superbeast- Rob Zombie

I'll talk about everything from my favorite music and movies, to how I'm adapting to living far away from home. I'm excited to see where this goes, and I look forward to seeing your feedback! <3

  1. Oh I want Felix…. I love that you’re linking them to music because that’s something that helps me as well!! Genuinely able to understand them better by what they listen to or what songs could possibly represent the arcs that they go through. If anything bad happens to Marcy I am going to riot outside of your dorm

  2. I love these characters so so much and I can’t wait to read your novelette. I love the vibes it has already, and I am loving what I’ve heard about it so far.

  3. I was planning to blog about some of my characters too and their relationship thus far from how its different from the play I had written to the novel series I’m writing. This was actually very unique and expressive, and I love learning more about Felix, he seems complex and yet so simple at the same time making him hard to read and I love it!

  4. I really think this is going to be so good especially since he’s anything like Rodrick and I love that the characters are normal not dramatized characters with everything about them being unique. it gives people the realization of sonder (the profound feeling of realizing that each random passerby is living a life as complex and vivid as you own) I feel like it’s going to be laidback but not too much and be a slow burn type of novel !
