BEWARE!! You’re in for a Scare

Hello, hello, welcome back to another one of my posts.

Let me start off by saying: if you get my title reference, I love you and comment if you did.

As we all know Spooky Season is approaching and this is the time of the year when almost everyone summons their inner child and gets accompanied with the tricks and treats. There are other ways for us to celebrate the Fall weather that has the scent of pumpkin spice and background noise of Scary Halloween audio playlists; whether it’s going to haunted houses, or reading horror books (my personal favorite), or just cuddling up with your favorite snacks during this time; we do it our own ways.   Well, one of my ways to spend this time is by rewatching scary childhood movies.

Yes!  The movies my ten-year-old self would cry while watching it in the morning daylight and with all my family in the house with me (I couldn’t help it; it was too scary.)  It’s better now though because I can watch these in a thunderstorm with all the power out, alone like a breeze (I don’t know why I’m lying to myself) and I enjoy it.                                                                        With that being said, for this post I’m going to rate my top three scary movies from my childhood that I think you should watch.

# 3   Tim Burton’s, The Corpse Bride

I was about a 6 -7-year-old child when I cried watching the ending of this movie at my grandma’s house.  It was so sad which was kind of a relief to me then because it was really scary. The movie itself though was deep and now that I’m older I realize, the man had to make some sacrifices.  Now, for those who hasn’t watched the movie here’s the rundown:

The movie is a stop-animated film that’s romance and fantasy (also horror to people like me) starring Johnny Depp playing the main male lead; Victor Van Dort and Helena Bonham Carter playing the female lead; Emily a.k.a. The Corpse Bride, in the Victorian Gothic era. Victor Van Dort is a man whose parents have betrothed him to Victoria Everglot because the Everglots need the money from the Van Dorts and the Van Dorts want their entry into high society.

Personally, I really loved Victoria. She was so sweet, Victor also loved her, he just didn’t love the situation.  Since Victor didn’t like the idea of being married for influence, he got cold feet during wedding rehearsals and decided to leave to practice for his wedding vows (thinking about what he truly wants).  He didn’t know where he was running to, he just kept running until he had gotten to the forest.  Which was all blue and gray and looked whimsical but scary in a good way.                                                                                                                                                  While he’s practicing his wedding vows there’s a strange presence there, like someone is listening to him, Victor still practicing what he’s going to say to Victoria he puts her wedding ring on a “branch.”   He plans to continue his own personal wedding rehearsal when the tree wakes up and the scene with Victor getting scared happens.  Once all of that has passed it is revealed that the tree was actually a dead woman’s corpse, and she claims that she’s now married to Victor.  Sadly, Victor has to decide if he wants to stay married to her for eternity.                                                                                                                                         There are more details, like the fact that Emily is cursed because she was wrongly killed, and she won’t rest until she either gets married or finds peace.  Another thing is that a rich snotty dude is trying to marry Victoria while Victor starts falling for Emily and can’t decide which bride he truly wants.    Does he want Emily, the dead bride who vowed to be set free by her true love, or does he want Victoria, the one he’s supposed to marry?    Love and sacrifice are the theme of this movie, especially if it’s worth someone whose heart doesn’t even beat.  I loved this movie so much as a child, I don’t really watch it anymore because of personal reasons.                                                                                                    For the people who do love gothic animation films and are huge fans of Tim Burton I think you should go and watch it.   The graphics in the movie were cry worthy.  It brought the aesthetic it needed to the table.   Also, it has potential to be a classic.  I rate it a 7/10.

# 2 Monster House

I have a question for those who haven’t watched this?   What did you do in your childhood?   Like genuinely, okay, okay kidding. I’m only kidding, I’m just wondering who hasn’t gotten the time to watch this.  This is the literal movie that I played day in and day out during the Fall season.  Even after Halloween and Netflix made a mistake by adding it on there because I would ride the bus to school in the morning watching this.  Go to sleep with this playing in the background, I had two DVDs of this during quarantine and this is what I would watch back-to-back.   I know it sounds obsessive but it’s a part of the tradition once you watch it at your very first sleepover.                                                              Also, it’s okay if you don’t get my reasoning for the love of this movie if you never watched this, I’m going to tell you what’s it all about.

There are three main characters:  a young boy, who is about 12-13 named DJ, his best friend an adorable boy named Chowder, and DJ’s crush and everyone’s favorite character, a girl named Jenny.                                                                               The movie introduces us to DJ’s life.   DJ is a boy who really loves all things science fiction and supernatural which at his age is understandable, but DJ just doesn’t want to be seen as a little kid who enjoys sci-fi, he wants to be a grown teenager.    He aims for being seen as an adult, but his parents get him a babysitter as they travel away on Halloween’s eve.                                                     Later in the movie we get introduced to Chowder, he’s DJ’s best friend.  Chowder wants to go play basketball and discuss plans for Halloween.  They go to play basketball in DJ’s yard when the ball falls in Nebbercracker’s yard. NebberCracker is an old house where this sad old man lives.  He hates when children or anyone steps onto his yard.  The reason why; well, his house is alive, and the boys find that out when the house eats their ball.                                         The boys are scared to go after that, but they really need their ball back.  The retreat of the ball is the piece that pushes all of the dominoes.                 Nebbercrakcer sees them and has a heart attack while screaming at DJ to get off the yard.  DJ starts to feel guilty thinking he killed a man.  The boys stay in the house scared with the evil babysitter Vee.    They meet Jenny when she’s trying to sell at the Nebbercracker house, and the boys decide they need to save her before the house eats her too.   They run to get her right as the house is going to take her in.  After the experience of what they all saw the boys and the girl become a trio.   Then we see the plot and the endgame of the movie; to disclose the secret of the Haunted House and put an end to the Nebbercracker curse.

I am so obsessed with the ending of this movie.  It is literally a 9/10 (one point away because of the sad storyline of Mrs. Nebbercracker ).    All of the characters are funny and love how the house has the parts of a human.   Just really enjoyed how each secret played out and how the characters fought at the end.  I know most of us watched it so please go rewatch it to start off your spooky season.

# 1   ParaNorman

I’m being so real when I say this movie is ELITE (to me it is, you are welcome to disagree).                                                                                                                                         This movie is the movie I’m still sometimes scared to watch alone.   I mean there are a lot of scenes that make my skin crawl (the old cottage scene for sure with the dude that has the book) and make me cover my eyes because I would panic if I was in that situation.   This is the movie that my older sister picked out for herself and fell asleep on, leaving me wide awake to watch the horrors.  The animation on this movie is so life-like that the water they drank made me thirsty and it was fake.   Just know, this movie is nostalgic for me.

The 2012   stop-motion animated comedy horror film centers its story in the town Blithe Hollow where 11-year-old Norman Babock lives.   Norman Babock is perceived to be a normal boy who just does his daily routine of talking to his grandmother, you know even though she’s dead.                                                          Yes, Norman can speak to the dead, no one believes him though.  No one except for his best-friend Neil.                                                                                                           Norman doesn’t seem to mind that no one believes him (he actually kind of understands) the only thing he doesn’t understand is why he has the ability.  He’s not special or anything, or so he thinks.

Norman wants this to be a regular day when he just rehearses for his school play that’s based on the Salem trials, but no,  he has to have his dead ghost uncle show up and tell him he has a special ritual to do or the whole town will feel the fury of a curse cast by a witch who was wronged by Blithe Hollow way back in time.  Norman thinks this is crazy, but he also realizes this could be his purpose in this world, so he agrees to do it.                                                              Norman and unlikely companions go through obstacles fighting the undead and going through what seems like the end of the world to break the curse.  In the midst of it all Norman discovers the horrid truth behind the curse which also helps him find a piece of himself.                                                                                         Now the only thing standing between the town, and which is the decision of what Norman believes is the right thing to do.

I love this movie so much; I rate it a 11/10.  The animation was beautiful and the lesson the story tells is so unique and something everyone should learn.  Also, it’s a fun movie for the kids and the parents, there’s a good number of jokes in there for everyone.

Thank you for reading my rant on more horror topics and have a good day 🙂

Let’s Talk About Fear

Hello lovelies, I have a question for you.

Is there something out there in the big scary world that holds your deepest, darkest, waking fear?                                                                                                                  Yes?   Then be warned while reading this post because you might come across some of it.                                                                                                                                          No?   Then read this post and see the nightmares that I have uncovered.

When I was younger my teachers used to ask, “Do you have a phobia?”   I used to always say “Yes of course!  I’m scared of spiders,” but never thought about if that was actually a phobia.
I mean, I am scared of spiders and snakes a little bit, but not so much because I can kill them.  Then I start thinking to myself, is that really a phobia?   Well, what is a phobia exactly?

The dictionary says: Phobia –

pho·bi·a

[ˈfōbēə]

NOUN

  • an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something:
“He had a phobia about being under water” · “a phobia of germs” · “a snake phobia.”

If you go by the definition a phobia isn’t something you’re scared of, it’s something you’re terrified of.  It’s a fear that doesn’t even allow you to think straight.   With that, I’m going to discuss a couple of Phobias that interest me, and I decided to research them because I wanted to learn some of the reasons why people fear certain things.

1) Agoraphobia: Fear of Open Space or Crowds

Agoraphobia, I can see why this is a thing.  Sometimes places that are filled with tons of people can be pretty overwhelming.   I mean think of the types of scenarios.  There could be killer clowns hidden amongst all of those faces, but you wouldn’t know because there are too many people.  Also, I know someone who hates places where there are a lot of entries for bad people to get through and it’s easy for them to get mixed in the crowd.  Babies can have a minor fear of a lot of people because they can get easily lost among the crowd and don’t know how to go through all of the bodies of people. So, for this to be an extreme fear is understandable.  When researching why this is a common fear in society the causes of it come from anxiety of public places and environmental experiences of panic attacks.   Symptoms can be identified as shallow breathing, sweaty palms, and panic attacks.  This fear is real and affects a great amount of civilization, this interested me because a lot of people have it.

2) Genuphobia: Fear of Knees

Genuphobia, all I have to say is, who is out here scared of knees?  I’m not making fun of it; this is most likely genuine which is why I’m interested in the reasons for it.                                                                                                                               When thinking about it, someone has to be going through it by looking at their knees and being frightened by them.   For people who have knees (because some people are unfortunate to not have any legs) use them every day to walk, play soccer, do squats, jump rope, etc. and will most likely struggle without knees.  This is why I researched and read some articles for the background of this fear.   An article I found by Lisa Fritscher states “Some people are afraid only of seeing uncovered knees in person, while others are afraid of bare knees even on film. People with this phobia may be afraid of all knees or only their own. Some people are actually scared of kneeling.”  Which to me is strange but it is rare; so, someone out there must have their reason. The same article says a main cause is personal trauma, someone could have been hurt in an accident where they almost lost their knees or saw someone else, they were close to lose their knees.   Another cause could be traced from highly religious or cultural upbringings.  There’s nothing wrong with that, once you tell me it’s because of your beliefs I fully understand, you do you.                                                                                                  The people with this phobia cope by averting their eyes away from people or their knees.  People who have it more severe are recommended to a therapist to get better treatment to cope.                                                                                                          I can’t see myself having this phobia, but I will show respect towards those who do.  Also, here’s the link to explore the religion part of the phobia.

3)Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia: Fear of Long Words

I’m not even going to repeat this one, it’s way too long to type out.                            The fear of words with too many unnecessary letters is a rare fear in society.  There could be many reasons for why someone would adapt this fear that might sound like a good reason to some but if it doesn’t, as long as it doesn’t bother you, we shouldn’t make fun of the people who are frightened of words like  supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.                                                                                          There are many sides to having this fear.  People just don’t have to be scared of the word itself, they can be scared of how many syllables the word has, some might be scared of the word because they never saw it or discovered it.   In other actions a person may be scared of words that are longer in length and look squished together.

In my view, these words are intimidating and too clunky.  The letters just kind of blend together and look like you fell asleep on your keyboard.  It seems like someone just typed gibberish.
I mean if someone asks me to read this word aloud for them, I’m going to run away screaming.  Especially if I’m put on spot.                                                                       Some things you might do with having this fear is avoid reading books, lack on English bases Academics and avoid talking with new words you don’t understand or want to understand.

Symptoms of it may include:

Abdominal pain

Chest Pain

Nausea

Dizziness

Lightheadedness

Which will likely occur in front of these words.

Treatment for it could be going to therapy.   Taking anxiety medication, SSRIs for example and getting Psychotherapy treatment.                                                   While researching this I found that there were other factors that caused the development of this fear.  One of those causes being behavioral inhibition, some might have that being anger issues.

You can read more about right here: Fear of Long Words: Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia (verywellmind.com)

It was interesting reading about different fears and anxieties in society.   I’m more informed about how people cope with things that may be strange or weird to me or you, daily.

It’s best to remember to respect people who have certain fears different from ours and to have their backs about it.  Also, if you don’t mind, comment on any of your fears.

Good day 🙂

The Chapter of the End

Hi, welcome back Lovelies.   For this post I’m not going to review any Thriller or Mystery shows, instead, I’m showing one of my works from my younger days that was revised.  This work is in the genre of Thriller and Mystery.  Here you go   ?

Tommy Walt is sitting in his bed flipping through a magazine when his TV switches to the Scream movie.”  Riley Day is walking down the street late at night while reading a book that she wants to finish so much.   It’s a horror suspense book about kids that disappear from their houses mysteriously.  She flashes her camera light on her book in one hand as she keeps walking.   She starts reading back aloud.  “Tommy looks around to make sure he isn’t sitting on his remote.  When he notices that he isn’t, he doesn’t deem it weird; he just shrugs it off.   With no worry; Tommy relaxes and goes back to reading. Not even seconds later; he hears someone throw what sounds like a rock at his downstairs door.  He jumps, now that’s weird because he’s home alone so nobody in his family is pranking him.  “Who’s there?”  he asks.  Silence.   He just decides to get up and change the TV.  Minutes later he hears faint scratching on his bedroom window.  That’s when he gets scared. Tap… Tap… That’s all he hears.  “Stop it!” He shouts.  But it doesn’t work, and the scratching and the tapping get louder.   It gets quiet until someone whispers very softly… “ Tooommmy” It sounds like a soft howl of a girl.  Tommy jumps out of bed again and runs to his bedroom door.  It’s locked.  He wiggles it vigorously as he cries and panics.   Instead of escaping the lights come off.  “Ah!”  He shouts.   He runs to his window about to open it, but comes to find out the windows are already open.  He whimpers as he steps back falling to the floor.  There’s no escape unless… Tommy ran to the window and just as he was about to leap out a dark gloved hand clamps over his mouth from behind.   Tommy meets pitch blackness.   That night Tommy wasn’t found in his bedroom.  Riley stops at a crosswalk as she finishes reading the first chapter of the book.   “Tap…”  She looks around as she hears a faint sound, like the sound described in the book.  Like Tommy, she shrugs it off and walks across the street, time for the next chapter.   Leah Wright was putting on her make-up in the bathroom; the door shut so her parents wouldn’t see her.   She was singing aloud to her phone when she heard a deafening thump coming from the stairs.  She quickly turned off her music.  “Mom…? Dad…?!”  Leah shouted; she didn’t get a response.  After her family had been robbed when she was young Leah took no chances.  She quickly opened the door and peeked out.  The hall was clear, but Leah could feel in her chills that something was wrong.   She quietly stepped out of the bathroom.  When she heard no noise, she ran to her bedroom in the hall and grabbed her phone.   She quickly texted her friend Riley: Someone’s in my house.   Leah then slowly got her softball bat and creaked down the hall until she was near the staircase.   The stairs looked like they went on for eternity.  “Hello?”  Leah called out.  She heard no response, but she did hear something crash like glass in the kitchen  followed by the lights coming off.  Leah gasps with fear.   “ Oh… no don’t go down the stairs, Leah.”  Riley whispers to the book as she stops to sit on a sidewalk.   Leah starts to walk down the steps then something grabs her hair.   She shouts and thrashes, dropping her bat in the process.  The intruder pulled her back hard, but Leah pushed away, and when she let go of the grip… She tumbled down the stairs.  Each fall a “ thump..bop.. Boof.”  Leah is knocked out barely breathing as she lies on the floor.  The intruder walks down the steps slowly and grips Leah’s ankles, her parents in the corner with their mouths and bodies taped up as the intruder drags Leah away.  Like Tommy, she didn’t come back home that night.  Riley finishes another chapter, but as she keeps reading, she notices that strangely all of the characters have the same names as Riley’s friends.  But she keeps reading, not paying it any mind.   Belle Hollis gets out of her friends’ car watching as they drive off.   She slowly pulls out her phone as she walks up to her doorstep.   Stopping to read the text her boyfriend sent her;  she hears a rustle over her soft laugh.  She quickly looks up.   No one’s there.  Rolling her eyes at her own eeriness Belle goes to unlock the door.  But before she could finish turning the knob something huge hit Belle in the back of the head, it felt like a bat.   She groaned as her vision wavered; she tried to scream when she saw the hooded all-black attacker above her.   It was too late.  Belle is kicked in the temple as her breath goes away and she bleeds on the concrete.   Riley is almost to her destination as she turns to the next chapter, she isn’t creeped out about anything she reads, she just wants to finish the book.  Crunch… Crunch…  Riley snaps her neck to the source of the sound, but she doesn’t see anything she has to run as she hears sirens in the distance.   The person who wears the black hood and the black gloves sat crouched behind the car in Alex Wolfley’s garage as they waited patiently for him to step out.  The book stops there, it needs to be finished.  Riley puts the book on the driveway and puts on her black hood as she watches the boy step out of the door.  He heard the sound of her throwing rocks and he noticed when she turned off the lights from the powerbox outside.  “ Hello… Who’s there?”   Riley doesn’t respond; she only creeps behind the second car as she throws Leah softball for a diversion.  She watches from under the car as Alex picks it up.  “Leah..? No.. she’s gone.”  She feels bad as she hears him talking to himself.  But not for too long, she shuts the garage door with the button on the side.   “ Who’s..s there?”  Alex’s voice shakes as he gets nervous.  Like clockwork, Riley turns off the lights, and like usual Alex runs to the back door that leads into the house but when he is distracted by the ball Riley puts a padlock on the door. She watches as he struggles but she grabs her book and slowly crept behind him.  He turned around swiftly but Riley was quicker; she hit him in the head with the hard spine.  He fell with a thump at her feet.  Riley stared at him for a couple of moments before she pulled him by his shirt, she didn’t leave a trail this time because she made sure he didn’t bleed.                                                                                                                                                      On her way home, Riley finishes the chapter about Alex in her book, and she rereads it to make sure there is no way no one knew she wrote it about herself.

The End?

The Darkest Summers

Hello Lovelies,  I’m excited to welcome you all back to another Thriller review.

For this post, I wanted to rank and explain the details of a Hulu show that has been trending on most of my TikTok feeds.   Some might have heard of it and if you didn’t it’s okay.  The show did skip two years to introduce a new season after originally running on Freeform.   Meaning, that a lot of people who didn’t have DirectTV, Dish, or any non-streaming channel;  most likely missed this.        I’m going to start off by writing that,  this show has a lot of layers and the first two episodes of each season were boring.  Yes, it was boring and I’m not ashamed to say it because the production team did a whole 360 and left my jaw on the floor.   There were so many plot twists I couldn’t even see all of them properly.   Listen, it wasn’t even the “ too many” plot twists, each curve and Red Herring left me packing my suitcase and saying “Bye Bye” because I couldn’t believe it.  Now, with my quirky intro over, let’s talk about the difference between the two seasons of  Cruel Summer.

Season 1

Cruel Summer Season 1: New Release, Details, Trailer, and More ...

This one right here will forever be my favorite.   This season was deceiving and confusing.  The way the writers unravel each detail is great, and each new scenario is so intricate that you can barely be mad that we didn’t have a hero.  The only way you can understand what I mean is to watch it yourself.  For some people though, you really just don’t have the time. That’s why I’m going to give you a quick little background information to visualize it yourself.

Cruel Summer is told in three parts, this is the format for each season.  There’s the two past, and then there’s the present.  The first track of the past is 1993.   This shows the build-up of what’s going to take place, in this case; one of the main character’s disappearance.  The second track is 1994, which explains the aftermath of what already took place.  The last track is 1995, which is the present.   All of these times sew up together just the right way.

Season 1 gives us an insight into the lives of Kate Wallace and Jeanette Turner.  Kate is made out to be a kind, sweet, cheerful girl.   People say she never lies and that you can get really close to her because her soul is so  beautiful.  Some might say you Hate To Love her, that’s probably why she’s so popular.  Then we have our completely not so completely opposite of  Kate,  her name’s Jeanette.    Jeanette admires the life she wants from afar.  That life is, the perfect boyfriend, all the best-looking friends, and the beauty, she loves the beauty.   Jeanette doesn’t think she has the beauty but she loves her “misfit” group of friends.  She just doesn’t admire her braces or her glasses, she’ll trade her frizzy brown hair for silk blonde hair any day.  This is what we see from the Summer of 1993,  the contrast that both girls share.   How one admires the other one, while that one secretly loathes their expectational life.  This is what the producers want us to see, the difference between the two.   But soon the contrast turns into one defining trait once the other half disappears of all trace.

We then see the early and late Fall of 1994.  Everything is in chaos, at this point though the chaos is more of a misidentity.   No one knows which role they were supposed to be playing.   After Kate disappeared her friends didn’t know who to follow,   Kate’s boyfriend didn’t know who to be affectionate with,  and the people didn’t know who they were supposed to Hate to Love.   The distress was all over though when Jeannette decided that everyone could follow her lead.  Jeanette planned for that role for about 3 months, she changed her hair to straight and voluminous, she took out her braces, and she started wearing revealing clothes, unlike Kate.  She actually almost had her down to the T, besides the clothes.   The other thing she was bad at was telling the truth or so we think.  The thing we do know for sure is that Jeanette is holding a deep secret behind her new pearly whites.

Next is the introduction of the present, which is the late Winter of 1995.   It’s when we watch all of Jeanette’s hard work blow up in her face.  We also find out what actually happened to Kate Wallace.

This season blows your mind.  I literally threw my shoe at the TV.   Just like the Perfect Host you don’t recognize the hero or the villain.  You don’t even know if there IS a hero.  Which is personally a good ingredient to a great drama/mystery show.

Season 2

Cruel Summer Season 2 Release

This season was amazing, but sadly I can only rank one of them on top.

This part of the series was unexpected because after waiting two years, we got introduced to a whole new cast with a bunch of new complex characters.                  Just like the first season, this one was shown in three timelines.  There is the Summer of 1999, the Winter of 1999, and the Summer of 2000.   This season also follows computer genius and good/shy girl Megan Landy partnered with outgoing/bubbly Isabella LaRue who are all united by Luke Chambers(someone who I now love to hate, but also really love).

In the Summer of 1999, we got the first peek into Megan’s personality.  She’s hard-working,  smart, and absolutely in love with Luke Chambers.  He doesn’t know that even though they are best friends.   Up next, we come to face the background of  Megan’s family.  They live a middle-class life.  The life with the two-story house that has about five bedrooms inside with a minivan outside.   Megan lives with her sister and her mom, who doesn’t really take care of her like a mom.  The viewers don’t know why she and her mom don’t have that cozy relationship until three episodes later. The only thing we do know so far is that Megan is upset because after her father abandoned them, Megan has to fill the role of everyone’s mom.  This new role brings light to the details of her character.                                                                                                                                      When introduced to Isabella we learn that she’s an exchange student that Megan’s family hosts for the first time ever.  This upsets Megan because her mom is trying to take care of another child when she can’t even care for her own.  That does make a good case until Megan’s mom points out she’s hosting Isabella because she needs friends, Megan can’t argue with that because her Senior Year is coming up and she’s lonely.  So who’s a better friend than bubbly, pretty, sparkly, friendly, and rich Isabella LaRue, whom I’m just going to refer to as Izzy.                                                                                                                                           We meet Izzy, and all we learn is that she’s rich and has been all over the world to different boarding schools.  We also learn that she “has” a best friend named Lisa and Megan reminds Izzy of her.  She says they are the same way.   But that’s not what we are talking about, what we are talking about is half of the first timeline we see how Megan is taking this new girl she has already set-up herself to hate all around her favorite spots of their small town called Richmond.   Richmond is where everyone knows everybody, and everybody knows the Chambers family.  Well, everybody except Izzy.  So when Megan introduces her to older brother Brent Chambers and younger brother Luke Chambers,  she already knows who she’s going to target first.  This very same target leads to someone floating in the Richmond Lake water.   Until we see the end and find out the floating somebody is dead.                                                            The second season to me was too much of a slow-burn.  I did enjoy the build-up though, but I wanted exposed secrets to punch me in the face like the first season, but it was more like meh.   It’s still good though, and each season is stand-alone which is awesome.  So I recommend you to please go watch it.

The Host with The Most Drama

Of course I knew my very first blog was going to be about something chaotic and creepy.  The reason is that the things I watch and read about are psychological, scary, and make you want to bang your head on the wall and rethink your whole life.  That’s a good thing though because there are a ton of people out there who are like me.  They’re the people who analyze true crime in their free time. This is most likely why you decided to read this today. So, stick with me and pay attention, please lovelies.

This past Summer I forced my siblings to allow me to pick their brains about certain shows and their plots (and there have been many of them).   I did this to bring up the question, “What would you do differently?” and all of those answers led to 3 a.m. girl talk conversations about a particular person who didn’t or did deserve what happened to them.  This is lucky for you because I want to give you the same experience by telling you about the plot of the movie which led to my questions.  The movie is called The Perfect Host.

Our hypothetical 3 a.m. questions would be “What Would You Do as The Bad Guy in this scenario?” or my personal favorite, “Who Is the Villain in This Story?”  Keep these in mind as you journey into what you are reading.  Side note:  Please don’t read this if you mind spoilers.  In my opinion, though, I would still go watch this just to make sure the person telling me this didn’t make it up.

The movie stars John Taylor (a smart man who’s good at chess) and Warwick Wilson (an interesting man at best) whose lives join together in the most wicked way.  At the beginning of the movie, we learn about John Taylor and his life story through clips of his memories with his girlfriend Simone while he’s robbing a bank.  After robbing said bank the next day, he’s in another robbery but instead of him, there’s a woman.  John just wants to mind his business but instead, the writers make him become the “hero,” leaving John with tackling the gun out of the woman’s hands and she ends up shooting him in his foot.   Of course, John gets mad and of course the t.v. tunes in at the right moment with John on the news for a robbery because the cameras caught him.   After that, everything else is John limping to his car and driving as far away as he can until he ends up in a country bumpkin-looking neighborhood.  The next part after this was impressive to me, but I recommend not doing it.  John Taylor is bleeding badly, and he needs somewhere to go and wash up.  He also needs to hide from the police that’s looking for him. Want to know what he does next?  He starts reading people’s mail to find information on the person’s lifestyle, who they live with, whether they are rich, and whether they could potentially be outside of town.  This keeps going until he finds Warwick Wilson’s house. Warwick’s house is big, shiny, and dated with an open mailbox.  In Warwick’s mailbox, there is a postcard from someone named Julia explaining her fun trip to Australia and how she wishes that Warwick could join her.  After John sees that, he is like “I got a plan”.  John walks up the road and rings the doorbell.  He had already come up with the backstory in his head that he was Julia’s cousin, and she was supposed to have someone pick him up from the airport.   Julia forgot and he doesn’t want to be out so late while bleeding from a cut he got at the airport.  It was going to be easy. That’s what he thinks when Warwick opens the door and asks his credentials, “Who are you?”  “How do I know you” and things like that.  John answers him with his full backstory while Warwick sips the wine glass in his hand.   When John tells Warwick his story, Warwick is hesitant; so, he tells John “I’m hosting a dinner date tonight. My guests are arriving soon.”  John assures him he’ll be out of the way.  Warwick being the person he is, lets John come into the house.

Everything past this point is John looking around and Warwick being hospitable while asking too many questions.  John had the answers prepared for the questions up until the point when Warwick called the police.  He reports a missing suitcase for John which terrifies John because he is LYING.  So instead of telling the truth, John blows his cover and threatens Warwick with a knife.  This scene is so chaotic I can’t even explain it.  Just please watch the movie.  After their little petty fight, John admits he doesn’t know Julia; he starts drinking the wine Warwick had put on the table.  Warwick is hopping around the place cleaning the blood trail John left on the floor.   John is like “I threatened to kill this dude and he’s cleaning?”   What is wrong with him?  John then gets up to kick Warwick in the face because somehow, he’s on the ground when he falls like a limp rag doll.  Next, Warwick springs up and takes his chance by hitting John in the head with a wine bottle.  Then the next scene blackens. Soon after, we see that John awakens and he’s scared more than he’s confused.   This leaves the viewers wondering but we soon get our answer.  The reason why:  We see Warwick talking to a bunch of people who we are guessing are his dinner party.  We also see that John is looking at Warwick talking to plain empty chairs.

I’m stopping right here because it’s enough for you to get the idea of where the questions came from.   Now, my rating on this movie is 8/10, with 2 points deducted because there were some questions left unanswered.  In my opinion, the movie was weird but in a good way.  Some things could’ve been redone or better explained.  Overall, the movie was great, and I hope whoever watches it enjoys it.
