She fought for the rights of women and Native Americans. She led Cherokee Nation from 1985 to 1995 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Bill Clinton in 1998. \u201cShe understood that great leadership begins with the women \u2014 that\u2019s our long, cultural tradition,\u201d said Chad Smith, who was chief when she died in 2010. \u201cIf I had one word to frame her, it would be patriot. A patriot is one who gives her all for her people.\u201d Gloria Steinem spoke at her memorial service.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/janetmock.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Janet-Mock-photo-by-Derek-Wood-450x600.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for Janet Mock\" width=\"287\" height=\"383\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Janet Mock<\/em><\/span>:\u00a0is an American writer, television host, director, producer and\u00a0transgender rights\u00a0activist. Her debut book, the memoir\u00a0<i>Redefining Realness<\/i>, became a\u00a0<i>New York Times<\/i>\u00a0bestseller. She is a contributing editor for\u00a0<i>Marie Claire<\/i>\u00a0and a former staff editor of\u00a0<i>People<\/i>\u00a0magazine&#8217;s website.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/resizer\/m84vvE2F-EY0wVdxSBk0_fUX4Ws=\/arc-anglerfish-washpost-prod-washpost\/public\/B6XVKAW4HZBGVMLLHIJD2XIB4U.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for sylvia rivera and marsha p johnson\" width=\"467\" height=\"311\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Sylvia Rivera (left) and Marsha P. Johnson (right)<\/em><\/span>: Sylvia and Marsha were both instigators for the Stonewall Riots, a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the gay community against a police raid that began in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. They were also activists for the LGBTQ+ community.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/2\/2a\/Linda_Sarsour_on_19_May_2016.jpeg\" alt=\"Image result for linda sarsour\" width=\"335\" height=\"431\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Linda Sarsour<\/span><\/em>:\u00a0Linda Sarsour is an American political activist. She was co-chair of the 2017 Women&#8217;s March, the 2017 Day Without a Woman, and the 2019 Women&#8217;s March. She is also a former executive director of the Arab American Association of New York.\u00a0Sarsour has advocated for Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied territories and expressed criticism of\u00a0Zionism\u00a0and support for the\u00a0Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions\u00a0(BDS) campaign against\u00a0Israel. Sarsour also helped organize\u00a0Black Lives Matter\u00a0protests. Sarsour helped form &#8220;Muslims for Ferguson&#8221;, and she traveled to Ferguson with other activists in 2014. She has continued to work extensively with BLM ever since. Sarsour became a regular attendee at Black Lives Matter demonstrations as well as a frequent television commentator on\u00a0feminism.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/s26162.pcdn.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Angela-Davis.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for angela davis\" width=\"451\" height=\"237\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Angela Davis<\/span><\/em>:\u00a0Angela Davis\u00a0rose to prominence during the\u00a01960s Civil Rights Movement due to her involvement with the Communist party. She was\u00a0targeted by the FBI and later imprisoned but\u00a0then acquitted on murder and kidnapping charges in association with a courtroom attack\u00a0during the trial of the\u00a0Soledad Brothers, three African-American inmates\u00a0charged with the murder of a white prison guard. She has been a professor and author and today focuses on battling the\u00a0\u201cindustrial prison complex\u201d\u00a0in the U.S. as well as the role of black women and\u00a0the rise of\u00a0intersectionality in feminism.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/ocasio-cortez.house.gov\/sites\/ocasio-cortez.house.gov\/files\/wysiwyg_uploaded\/2018-11-30_fcm_0452re.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez\" width=\"311\" height=\"467\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/em><\/span>:\u00a0is serving as the\u00a0U.S. Representative\u00a0for\u00a0New York&#8217;s 14th congressional district. Taking office at age 29, Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest woman ever to serve in the United States Congress.<sup id=\"cite_ref-GrigoryanSuetzl190_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0She has been noted for her substantial\u00a0social media\u00a0presence relative to her fellow members of Congress. Ocasio-Cortez majored in\u00a0international relations\u00a0and economics at\u00a0Boston University, graduating\u00a0<i>cum laude<\/i>\u00a0in 2011. She was previously an activist and worked part-time as a waitress and bartender before running for Congress in 2018.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/7\/7f\/Maria_Ressa.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for maria ressa\" width=\"333\" height=\"444\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Maria A. Ressa :<\/span><\/em>\u00a0is a Filipino journalist and author, best known for co-founding\u00a0Rappler, an online news website based in the Philippines, as its\u00a0chief executive officer.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0She previously spent nearly two decades working as a lead investigative reporter in Southeast Asia for\u00a0CNN. She was included in\u00a0<i>Time<\/i><span class=\"nowrap\">&#8216;<\/span>s\u00a0Person of the Year 2018\u00a0as one of a collection of journalists from around the world combating\u00a0fake news.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/images\/2019\/10\/30\/obituaries\/28Ogata1\/merlin_163508004_7693d965-6e3a-493f-a68c-f4565e13f445-articleLarge.jpg?quality=75&amp;auto=webp&amp;disable=upscale\" alt=\"Image result for sadako ogata\" width=\"431\" height=\"279\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Sadako Ogata<\/span><\/em>:\u00a0\u00a0was a\u00a0Japanese\u00a0academic,\u00a0diplomat, author, administrator, and professor\u00a0emeritus\u00a0at the Roman Catholic\u00a0Sophia University. She was widely known as the\u00a0United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees\u00a0(UNHCR) from 1991 to 2000, as well as in her capacities as Chair of the\u00a0UNICEF\u00a0Executive Board from 1978 to 1979\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-:0_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-:12_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>and as President of the\u00a0Japan International Cooperation Agency\u00a0(JICA) from 2003 to 2012. She also served as Advisor of the Executive Committee of the Japan\u00a0Model United Nations\u00a0(JMUN).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>There are many, many more women that don&#8217;t get their names in the media as often as they should. I highly encourage you to do your own research and learn who they are and what they do\/did.
