{"id":798,"date":"2017-09-22T14:00:34","date_gmt":"2017-09-22T19:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.msabrookhaven.org\/literary\/?p=798"},"modified":"2017-09-22T14:00:34","modified_gmt":"2017-09-22T19:00:34","slug":"out-of-hand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.msabrookhaven.org\/literary\/2017\/09\/22\/out-of-hand\/","title":{"rendered":"Out of Hand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I wrote this after going to a department store with my friend. \u00a0I imagined if each finger had a personality, and then based the character off of someone that is like someone I used to know.<\/p>\n<p>Multicolored fingernails.<\/p>\n<p>Lori walks into a department store.<\/p>\n<p>She picks the colors that fit her liking.<\/p>\n<p>She leaves.<\/p>\n<p>Free of charge,<\/p>\n<p>Free of consequences.<\/p>\n<p>Left hand.\u00a0 Dominant.<\/p>\n<p>The sparkly yellow thumb.<\/p>\n<p>She politely asks wild lovebug if he wants a ride.<\/p>\n<p>He accepts, wildly exploring,<\/p>\n<p>Finding comfort in the faded cigarette burn.<\/p>\n<p>Soon fades into the wind.<\/p>\n<p>The orange pointer finger.<\/p>\n<p>She clashes with yellow.<\/p>\n<p>Lori kind of likes it that way.<\/p>\n<p>Visible vein runs through,<\/p>\n<p>Tromping through her wildflowers of flesh.<\/p>\n<p>Vein knows it&#8217;s a dead end,<\/p>\n<p>It just enjoys the journey.<\/p>\n<p>The glittered pink middle finger.<\/p>\n<p>Tainted with the blood of rage.<\/p>\n<p>He dances in the limelight often,<\/p>\n<p>Solos of passion.<\/p>\n<p>He doesn&#8217;t care if no one claps.<\/p>\n<p>He performs for himself.<\/p>\n<p>Uncolored ring finger<\/p>\n<p>Stop defining him with an accessory,<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t try to suffocate him with a ring.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s a rebel,<\/p>\n<p>Wearing no color,<\/p>\n<p>For Lori could not find a fitting one she liked.<\/p>\n<p>He glides through the fresh spray paint on the train.<\/p>\n<p>The mess is nice.<\/p>\n<p>Black pinkie finger.<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s subtly backed by ever color,<\/p>\n<p>Glimmering in the light.<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s just a tad bit crooked.<\/p>\n<p>She digs into Mom&#8217;s Thanksgiving mashed potatoes,<\/p>\n<p>Bold and mocking.<\/p>\n<p>Taken out of the mouth with a loud pop.<\/p>\n<p>Right hand.\u00a0 Lesser dominant, but still.<\/p>\n<p>Iridescent thumb,<\/p>\n<p>Swirled with greens, blues, purples in a galaxy.<\/p>\n<p>He strokes the knob of the telescope<\/p>\n<p>As Lori tries to look for something bigger than this,<\/p>\n<p>Trying to delve past her own layers.<\/p>\n<p>But she looks at the stars<\/p>\n<p>With differently colored fingernails,<\/p>\n<p>So that must mean she\u2019s deep.<\/p>\n<p>Slimy green pointer finger,<\/p>\n<p>What a devil she is,<\/p>\n<p>For she caresses Anya,<\/p>\n<p>Dragging from the blush on her cheeks<\/p>\n<p>To her sensitive thigh, riddled with goosebumps.<\/p>\n<p>All the while, apathetic.<\/p>\n<p>She knows Lori has a date with another in an hour.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, she rakes and pillages Anya\u2019s love.<\/p>\n<p>Purple middle finger,<\/p>\n<p>They don\u2019t want to be gendered.<\/p>\n<p>Please use the correct pronouns.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re quite sweet,<\/p>\n<p>But quite wild,<\/p>\n<p>Stroking the volume to the radio<\/p>\n<p>With a startling intensity.<\/p>\n<p>Sparkly orange ring finger,<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s soft and lonely,<\/p>\n<p>Tired of being forgotten,<\/p>\n<p>Misnamed after her twin.<\/p>\n<p>She traces the words to the bible<\/p>\n<p>As Lori\u2019s tears fall softly upon it,<\/p>\n<p>Remembering the home which she rebelled from.<\/p>\n<p>Pale blue pinkie.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s a little funny,<\/p>\n<p>A little mess of polish on the top.<\/p>\n<p>A scar adorns his side<\/p>\n<p>From the snap of trying to tune a piano string,<\/p>\n<p>The memory of eight years of le\u2014<\/p>\n<p>chop.<\/p>\n<p>Lori is interrupted from admiring her fingers.<\/p>\n<p>She regrets not paying the candy man on time<\/p>\n<p>But the cocaine just paired so well with breakfast,<\/p>\n<p>Right before a bite of toast<\/p>\n<p>With a little jam.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I wrote this after going to a department store with my friend. \u00a0I imagined if each finger had a personality, and then based the character off of someone that is like someone I used to know.
