{"id":4010,"date":"2018-09-06T09:30:40","date_gmt":"2018-09-06T14:30:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.msabrookhaven.org\/literary\/?p=4010"},"modified":"2018-09-06T09:30:40","modified_gmt":"2018-09-06T14:30:40","slug":"letters-to-my-summer-lover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.msabrookhaven.org\/literary\/2018\/09\/06\/letters-to-my-summer-lover\/","title":{"rendered":"Letters to My Summer Lover."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those late, summer nights,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have always given me the best memories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We\u2019d sneak out and go to a field,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just watching the stars,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> talking all night long.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;d tell me about you&#8217;re movie star dreams,<\/p>\n<p>And your mile long bucket list.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your car always smelled like pizza,<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It made sense because you worked a summer job at Papa John\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I miss getting free bread sticks,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and listening your bizarre stories about your co-workers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I loved those nights the most,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when we would eat out at Waffle House,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because it was the only place open in our old farm town. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember when we saw my mom\u2019s best friend there,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and had to leave before she recognized us?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was so funny,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> now that I\u2019m looking back on it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We got so scared even though she probably wouldn&#8217;t have cared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oh, and the cliche walks on the beach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> How huge of a crush I had on you,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Just wondering if you felt the same for me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When you held me close,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you smelled like a fresh cappuccino,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> waiting on my marble kitchen counter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It made me feel secure and protected,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the breathtaking darkness around us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I remember the night time crickets,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would attempt to hoodwink our perfect nights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We were smart enough to not let them phase us,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but dumb enough to let them get a scare out of us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We knew if our parents ever found out where we were,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we would be forever looked down on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Forever chastised.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I\u2019d be forced to never see you again,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but we would just go through the same routine,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we\u2019ve been doing for months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But like any great love fling,<\/p>\n<p>they all die.<\/p>\n<p>Our love was thrown in the gutter,<\/p>\n<p>with the rest of the summer lovers.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking back, those nights were so wicked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Breaking into hotel swimming pools,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and screaming out the window at the top of our lungs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I know I don\u2019t see you now,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and I want you to know I\u2019m doing quite swell. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just remember to swing around the back way to my house,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when the summer nights revolve around us again.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Those late, summer nights, have always given me the best memories.
