and get mixed up in<\/p>\n\n\n\n

all the things she’s said<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That rare genuine smile<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I want to drink it in<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All that sweet venom<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hope she will not consider<\/p>\n\n\n\n

all her time spent<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A waste<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

the way her eyes catch <\/p>\n\n\n\n

on something just beyond mine<\/p>\n\n\n\n

as though she is already<\/p>\n\n\n\n

somewhere I cannot reach<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

the midday sun<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The literary wall<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Headlights flashing<\/p>\n\n\n\n

before you black out<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reading lamp<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five-year journal<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stinging honey<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discarded post-it note<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reading to the blind<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deaf<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dumb<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

A word pressed between the pages<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A thought left under a door<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drowning in marginal spaces<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please succumb to this war<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Raging fire<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ripe clay<\/p>\n\n\n\n

with its roots<\/p>\n\n\n\n

in something rotten<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Something poisonous<\/p>\n\n\n\n

that still smells sweet<\/p>\n\n\n\n

when you lean close enough<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

When you do not confront your fear head-on<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It creeps up behind you<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the guise of your own<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deformed thoughts<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new pattern<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addiction<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coping mechanism<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something to justify today<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and then tomorrow<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and another<\/p>\n\n\n\n

until the thing has learned <\/p>\n\n\n\n

the shape of your life<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

destroying you slowly<\/p>\n\n\n\n

piece by piece<\/p>\n\n\n\n

gnawing away at your insides<\/p>\n\n\n\n

convincing you<\/p>\n\n\n\n

you have no way out<\/p>\n\n\n\n

you didn\u2019t choose this<\/p>\n\n\n\n

there\u2019s nothing you can do to change<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such a liar<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The things we refuse to acknowledge<\/p>\n\n\n\n

do not disappear<\/p>\n\n\n\n

they ferment<\/p>\n\n\n\n

waiting in the dark<\/p>\n\n\n\n

with their mouths open<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

screaming in your face<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tingling legs<\/p>\n\n\n\n

stabbing<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

A body becoming unfamiliar<\/p>\n\n\n\n

one sensation at a time<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the room tilts<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the blood rushes somewhere<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I cannot follow<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I tell myself to breathe<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I tell myself this is only a thought<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the thought has teeth<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And somewhere beneath all of it<\/p>\n\n\n\n

beneath the fear<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the wanting<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the fire and mud<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and blood and honey<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
