Beauty standards are weird. There are, of course, ten billion other things in this world that are weird, but today I want to focus on beauty standards for humans. With a tilt of my head, humans can look like amazing wonders of biology, but with another tilt I realize that all humans look <\/span>horrifying.<\/span><\/i> Our eyes are so round and glassy, our wrinkled lips pull back to reveal the literal bones sticking out of our mouths, our fingers and toes wriggle so weirdly. Humans think humans are beautiful because they are used to how they look. But not every human has the same standard of beauty, and the beauty standards of the present are plain weird. Think about it for a moment. Why do we think certain things are beautiful?<\/span><\/p>\n

One thing I think about is the hatred of acne- almost every teenager ever gets acne, but the presence of it is met with disgust. I\u2019m not saying to stop taking care of your skin, but acne is so normal! Why is it hated so much? Despite how common it is, acne can have so many unique patterns- and that goes for so many other things, too. When I wash away my point of view of \u201cOh what on earth are human faces why do they move like that,\u201d the average human feels beautiful. To me, beauty should not be smooth faces, even brows, and whatever else is going on; beauty is uniqueness, beauty is being human. There are so many appearances out there with so much unique character.\u00a0<\/span>I <\/span>actually wrote a poem on this topic a while back, and I would like to share it. It sums up some of my thoughts pretty well, plus, why not?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0On another note- one of the things that brought this up was discussing character design with a friend. We both talked about how much we love seeing regular things like acne scars, sun spots, missing teeth, bushy eyebrows, braces, picked skin, and etc on characters, but I barely ever seen such things on characters outside my own friend group. I love creating characters with all sorts of features and shapes! Not only does it make them more recognizable, but it’s also lovely to see. And also realistic. You’re telling me there’s shows with teenagers in apocalyptic settings and none of them have a single pimple? Or chewed up nails? Or intense eyebags? Or sunburn?<\/span><\/p>\n

With that out of the way, here is the aforementioned poem.<\/p>\n

This Is Beauty<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rosy bumps dot your cheeks,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Shining in the sun.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They frame your smile gorgeously,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 but you\u2019d rather hide them, shunned.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Why are you afraid,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

to show such common uniquity?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0look- they have them, too, and so does she.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

don\u2019t you see the utter beauty?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Treat yourself with utmost care,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

but there’s no need to run.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 there shouldn\u2019t be, at least-<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

pimples happen to everyone.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0why do the coral spots garner frowns<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 When they\u2019re scattered like constellations?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Why do bodies attract heartless jabs<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0when they\u2019re a part of simple nature?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

what is the point of conformity,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 when there\u2019s so much more to adore?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 you grin with a charming dimple,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And your broad teeth gleam like priceless quartz.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The gaps between aren\u2019t oddities,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

they’re a perfect part of who you are.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some may be far-reaching,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 while others may have crevices,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 Perhaps some teeth are even absent,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Or you sport badass metal braces.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 The variety of appearances<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0is nothing short of sublime.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 The acne scars above your brow<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And the sunspots here and there<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 are like speckled pretty paint drops.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even the different scars embroidering your skin<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0no matter the size or shape,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span> Are like murals filled with history.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From your distinguished hooked nose,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

An amazing trait of character,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 To the bottoms of your rugged,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

running-wild soles,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There’s no doubt that you’re delightful.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 from your elegant, fanned ears,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

like big, perfect petals<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To the glorious deltas of stretch marks<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Spanning across your form,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Make no mistake- you\u2019re beautiful.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Small, tall, large, or skinny,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Every variation of the body,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You and your distinct features<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Are as stunning as the stars.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
