{"id":12729,"date":"2021-09-08T12:14:28","date_gmt":"2021-09-08T17:14:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.msabrookhaven.org\/literary\/?p=12729"},"modified":"2021-09-17T11:08:32","modified_gmt":"2021-09-17T16:08:32","slug":"milk-and-cookies-analysis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.msabrookhaven.org\/literary\/2021\/09\/08\/milk-and-cookies-analysis\/","title":{"rendered":"Milk and Cookies Analysis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Trigger warning: mature themes and a bit of cursing.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this blog I\u2019m going to be analyzing &#8216;Milk and Cookies&#8217;\u00a0 by Melanie Martinez.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/tsuGkIgatyE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/tsuGkIgatyE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>One, two, melatonin is coming for you.<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0Melanie references the popular kids rhyme \u2018One, two, buckle my shoe\u2019.\u00a0 Melatonin is also the chemical that induces sleepiness.\u00a0 In the previous song, \u201cTag You\u2019re It,\u201d Cry Baby is kidnapped by the Big Bad Wolf, in this song she is planning her escape.\u00a0 <em>Three, four, baby, won&#8217;t you lock the door?<\/em>\u00a0 Crybaby is being held captive and she is reflecting on this fact.\u00a0 <em>Five, six, I&#8217;m done with this. <\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Seven, eight, it&#8217;s getting late, so close your eyes, sleep for days.<\/em>\u00a0 Cry Baby refuses to be held captive anymore and so she plans to kill the Big Bad Wolf so she can escape.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"468\" height=\"625\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.msabrookhaven.org\/literary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/dasxxh1-bc879a71-056d-4287-a157-b40e61efd451.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12813\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.msabrookhaven.org\/literary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/dasxxh1-bc879a71-056d-4287-a157-b40e61efd451.png 468w, https:\/\/blog.msabrookhaven.org\/literary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/dasxxh1-bc879a71-056d-4287-a157-b40e61efd451-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 468px) 85vw, 468px\" \/><figcaption>Art Credit: NastyaMun on Deviantart<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Hush, little baby, drink your spoiled milk.<\/em>&nbsp; This references the popular children&#8217;s lullaby \u2018Hush, Little Baby\u2019.&nbsp; The wolf wants Cry Baby to make him cookies, the spoiled milk references the fact she plans to poison him.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"306\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.msabrookhaven.org\/literary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/melanie-martinez-cookies.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12812\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.msabrookhaven.org\/literary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/melanie-martinez-cookies.jpg 620w, https:\/\/blog.msabrookhaven.org\/literary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/melanie-martinez-cookies-300x148.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>I&#8217;m f***ing crazy, need my prescription filled \/ Do you like my cookies? \/ Can&#8217;t take it anymore, need to put you to bed \/ Sing you a lullaby where you die at the end.<\/em>&nbsp; This references the children\u2019s rhyme \u201cRing Around the Rosy,\u201d which has been theorized to be about the bubonic plague; however this has not been confirmed.&nbsp; Cry Baby, like the plague, will take the wolf out.&nbsp; Ironically Cry Baby is referred to as \u201cThe Best Girl\u201d in \u2018Tag Your It\u2019 when it tells us the wolf is trying to pick out the best child to kidnap.&nbsp; Ironically this girl will end up defeating him in the end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.msabrookhaven.org\/literary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/1256203450ea9a7c016c5a1fee9f1d63-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12814\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.msabrookhaven.org\/literary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/1256203450ea9a7c016c5a1fee9f1d63-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.msabrookhaven.org\/literary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/1256203450ea9a7c016c5a1fee9f1d63-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.msabrookhaven.org\/literary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/1256203450ea9a7c016c5a1fee9f1d63-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.msabrookhaven.org\/literary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/1256203450ea9a7c016c5a1fee9f1d63-1200x675.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blog.msabrookhaven.org\/literary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/1256203450ea9a7c016c5a1fee9f1d63.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Nine, ten, never want to see you again \/ Eleven, twelve, I pull off black so well. <\/em> Continuing the rhyme scheme of \u2018One, Two, Buckle My Shoe\u2019, Cry Baby mentions she is wearing black, hinting at the wolf\u2019s impending doom, and that she is not mourning it, but rather admiring her craftiness.\u00a0 <em>Sh** behind the curtain that I&#8217;m sick of sugarcoatin&#8217; \/ Next time you&#8217;re alone, think twice when you grab the phone.<\/em>\u00a0 Cry Baby is sick of playing along with the wolf and decides to do whatever she has to do to escape.\u00a0 In this case it is decided she must kill her captor to be able to escape; as this seems to be her best option.\u00a0 She is unleashing the dark side of herself, just like her mother and father do.\u00a0 This also may be a reference to her earlier song \u2018Dollhouse\u2019 about a dysfunctional family who appears picture perfect from the outside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point the chorus, <em>Ashes, ashes, time to go down \/ Ooh, honey do you want me now?
